Letters From Whitechapel

FFG announced a couple of months ago that they are doing a revised edition of Letters From Whitechapel. I hadn't noticed this notice or anything about the original game until just today, but it looked really cool. Then I dug into some reviews at another site and found that Letters From Whitechapel is just a heavy deduction and bluffing game that is completely unbalanced in favor of the bad guy. It's comparable to Fury of Dracula, only without the combat or special powers or encounters.

I completely disagree that it is skewed in favor of Jack. A competent police force can run Jack to ground about 60% of the time. Jack has to be willing to do the bold and unexpected to bolt through the police cordon.

It can be a brain burner and as a result, it gets infrequent play amongst our group.

I should also add that I do enjoy the game and recommend it.

I kept Letters from Whitechapel and traded off Fury of Dracula.

It is a pure deduction game of the scotland yard ilk, but much better than scotland yard. I prefer it to Fury as i am not a fan of Furys combat system. It is also simpler than Fury and i tend to play hidden movement games with non gamers.

It will be slow if you play it with more than 3 or 4 players (the game stupidly lists up to 6), but as a 2-4 player game it is solid.

I agree with The Jake, the difficulty in this game is largely defined by group think. As the detectives i'd argue pure deduction won't quite cut it, you do have to go on a hunch sometimes, but for me that is the sign of a good deduction game. You can easily modify the rules to make it easier or harder for one side if your group finds it unbalanced.

I hated it, but I don't really like SY much. I'd take Fury all day long and twice on Sunday over this.

The theme is good, and they did a good job of the game design, just not my kind of game, that's all.

What Pete said, but in addition, I really don't like this genre.
