fock, I clicked Thank You to Jeb's post instead of Submit on the big reply I had just typed up in Quick Reply. DAMMIT

here comes a shorter version...

Puerto Rico is my go-to game for 5 but it's not as strong as it is when you're 3 or 4. You have very little control at 5 people and it's super random as a result.

El Grande is really strong at 5 players. Super fun. I enjoy Caylus at 5 I think. I can't remember. Anything over 2 is great.

Agricola and Race to the Galaxy are both too long at 5 players in my opinion.

Zooloretto FTW. Seriously, with 5 it's perfect in length, and it's a hell of a lot of fun. There are ways to screw people (Oh, there's a truck with 2 apes? How about we stick a flamingo in there because the guy who needs the apes has no room for flamingos!) but it's very fun and nobody has ever gotten their feelings hurt here from it.

That said, repeated plays of BSG have proven that everyone at our little club is, in fact, a Cylon.

Taj Mahal is amazing. It's best with 5, and solid with 4. I think it was rethemed into a Beowulf game which you can get fairly cheap. Plus now it has.....THEME!

Vegas Showdown is great with folks who want to build their own little mansion or whatever. The notion of "this is mine" is very strong.

Our questioner nixed Imperial; one of his players will veto it. It's really good for 5, though.

Thanks for all these great suggestions.

I forgot about Zooloretto and Acquire. I introduced those to the group and they went over well.

Die Macher! Just kidding...

How about:

Chinatown
Lancaster
Tribune
In the Year of the Dragon
Shogun (Queen)

And for an off the reservation pick, BSG with just the base game. It's not a euro but man it sings with 5. The thread is full of good recommendations. I'd happily play most of them.

If low screwage is a requirement, then BSG might be a hard sell...

I forgot about Livingstone. I don't know why, but the group liked it fairly well. Sadly, the guy who brought it never came back (only the 2nd time). I think I offended him when I called his house to tell him what time game night was, his wife picked up, and I said, "Can XXXXXX come over and play with some war toys?" Kind of weenie.
