Kingsport Festival don't seem too popular. Been released for a few months now, and the score on bgg is pretty low,

It's quite a puzzle to choose the next game.

As opposed to $20 for some colored cardboard?

There's two small sheets of counters, two black market cards, a screen, the miniatures, and a rules sheet. It's also only $13 at online stores.

It's only $13 if you're spending another $87. It's telling that they haven't put the PDF of the rules up. Relevant to the topic, SoA was suggested with the caveat that it only plays 3/4. I am saying you can play 5/6 right now with the base game with the addition of some coloured buttons and the two lines of relevant rules. If you feel it works then by all means spend more on the actual plastic and tokens. Otherwise you can just sell on the base game without being so invested in it.

You're correct JEM, I was just letting people know you could get an official faction now in case it wasn't known. Then I felt I needed to defend it, maybe I shouldn't have. I didn't intend to undermine your original comment, just offer an option people may not be aware of (since it just came out).

This could be old age setting in, but I recall playing $10 for part of the Grim Bastards expansion at GenCon. Might have been $15; who can remember, it was a blur. I got the orange bikers and the Grim Bastards clubhouse card, but didn't get a screen. I did not get the 5-player smuggling card, nor did I get the 5-player rules. In fact, the game manufacturer had forgotten to put the Black Market cards in the box, and the Gale Force 9 folks gave me one when I bought the game. The girl at the register let me know I should keep this card, and told me so as if I was either 5 years old, or 90 (probably 90). "Now, don't throw that card away, you're going to need it when you play. So don't throw it away. Okay?" Yeah, I think I've got it.

To get kind of back on topic, it's obviously possible to round up enough stuff for 5 player SoA, sure. I wouldn't want to do it, because I like nice bits in a game. Granted, SoA isn't Space Hulk 3E, but it's alright. That's strictly my personal preference, though.

Actually, just thought of Castles of Burgundy for a "dice placement" game with less fuckery than Alien Frontiers. It's all passive aggressive interaction, but it has quite a few paths to victory, so you can usually find a way to stay in it. It's the only Feld game I'll stomach.

I'm planning on using the old ladies and boy scouts from Road Kill Rally as the Sunday School gang.

Gah, in a worker-placement bind right now.

I love Agricola. I really do. But looking at the price of Farmers of the Moor, I'm thinking whether it's better to just buy Agricola ACBAS.

Been playing a lot of Fields of Arle 2 player. I might like another game that fills this itch---specifically a low interaction, virtually no screwage sandbox worker placement game. Any suggestions? This is more of a "sit next to each other and do something together" game than a competitive or engaged boardgaming experience.

Ora et Labora is coming back into print, so I was thinking that... Is it a good choice re: these qualities? What say you? Any comparisons?

which Uwe games have you played? Caverna is a pretty fund sandbox activity, not sure I like it as a competitive game though.

Sure... I've played Agricola, Fields, and Le Havre. I like Fields best by a good distance. Le Havre was my least favorite because of the heavy overhead and narrowness of goal/paths. Agricola I like but I don't enjoy the overhead and the balance scoring (one of everything is better than specializing) and the worker number management being so primary. They are much tighter games than Fields but that isn't why I play worker placement, I have other games when I want to play a competitive game. Worker placement scratches more of a creative and completion itch for me. Maybe I'll do an article about that.

Caverna and Agricola are mechanically the same in some respects but Caverna is much more of a toy box where as Agricola looks like a toy box but is more of competitive blocking and resource system planning game. You can do a lot of things in Caverna and do them quite easily so its a fairly relaxing game with the right folks.

The Lovecraft theme caught my attention, but it ultimately looked like an overly fiddly worker placement game with a pasted-on theme. In all fairness, many worker placement games have a pasted-on theme, but this board just looks like a fancy flow chart.

Sons of Anarchy has gotten some attention in this thread, and for good reason. The ability to directly attack enemy workers is crucial, because it replaces the typical passive aggressiveness of worker placement with very direct player interaction. And the theme and setting is completed integrated in Sons of Anarchy because the designers clearly started with theme first, where most worker placement designs obviously start as a set of mechanics with theme as merely a visual design consideration.

I ~LOVE~ WP games, and I play Agricola once a day or so on my iPhone. Love it. But, if you're looking to replace it, Caverna is better. It's like they looked at 'Gric, found what sucked, and made those things better, punctuated by a slapped on DIFFERENT theme.

I've been playing the shit out of Hoodrats. I'm about to send it to an interested publisher, and it is literally the pinnacle of "Hybrid". It's a worker placement game with a shitload of luck, hard-fought combat, and with drug dealing, petty larceny, and prostitution. It's the game Men of Mayhem wished it was.
