After listening to that podcast, I think I'm going to pick up a copy of T&E to see what the fuss is about. I like the look of the Mayfair editions. Will I be missing anything if I go for one of those over the new FFG version?

Annnnnnd I just sold my old Hans im Gluck copy...

Just get the new one. The artwork is better than Mayfair, and you get not only the double sided board but a couple of good variant options that are actually very worthwhile. The plastic pieces are very nice (still miss the wooden ziggurats) and overall I'd say it's the definitive edition all things considered.

It's worth $50 to get the new one over Mayfair, if that's even cheaper now. I never really liked the look of that edition.

I've played both and the FFG version is head and shoulders above the Mayfair versions. The Mayfair one is UGLY. Some of the art is the same, but the FFG version guarantees that you'll get the "advanced" board and components (not all of the old editions do) and the rules and terminology are easier to wrap your head around in the new one.

Some might call it a negative, but I appreciate the smaller table space footprint of the FFG version.

Yeah, there are some changes to the terminology that frankly should have always been there...there used to be this weird "internal"/"external" conflict but they actually wisely applied a little of that FFG "theme=flavor text" thinking and changed it to "revolts" and "wars". And that means that what happens in those makes so much more sense to the newcomer.

I haven't actually played the new edition yet, but good God does it look beautiful. Between this and Samurai (which thankfully looks really close to the old version), FFG is setting a hell of a precedent.

My Mayfair copy has all the same two-sided board, rules, variants, and pieces as the new FFG release. Box says Mayfair 4116, and I believe it's from around 2008.

Functionally they're identical; get the one that has the price and looks you like best. I happen to like the look of my Mayfair edition.

I think my Mayfair copy has the one-sided board. Haven't played it in a while.

Actually, I think I have Uba's old copy from a math trade or sale or something.

Regardless, I find it a great game just as it is, and the components and art don't bother me at all. I like the little wood ziggurats.

Definitely recommend getting a copy, regardless of edition. It's an all-time great.

I've owned the Mayfair edition since pretty much day 1 and dumped it for the FFG version.

The component quality is a wash (great in either version) but the artwork is prettier on the FFG board.

Also, the way the conflicts are explained in the FFG rulebook is a lot easier to absorb for new players.
