My secret favourite eurogame is Race for the Galaxy, but without the expansions. It's from the designer of Throneworld after all.

Puerto Rico is really boring, though, I can't understand how Race could be based on it.

My intention was to stop with the second since that was all that was in the original design. However, the third has some interesting cards so I might be tempted. But it does add to the bloat; there're new icons and some cards have half a dozen to describe the power for a particular phase.

And it does have the Imperial Planet Buster...
(Yes, RftG finally has an icon for destroy a planet!)

You can destroy planets in Race now? That's awesome. I haven't played the 2nd or 3rd expansions, but I like the first just fine.

I like RFTG, but I think it would be way more awesome if you could attack each other and blow up starfleets and planets.

Yeah, but remember takeovers were only four cards in the second expansion, out of approximately 180 cards. If Brink is a similar size to it that'll take the total to 220 cards. I doubt there'll be more than one IPB, though I'd hope for a Rebel equivalent. Even if there's a couple of others, it's only 2% of the card mix.

The other problem with the copious expansions is that you can go a lot longer without ever seeing a card you need. The nature of RftG means that you generally have to commit to a strategy pretty early on, so if you are going for Military, and you never see another military world, you're screwed. This also became a problem with more players.

My friend who is a RftG fiend and plays with both expansions every time has played about 100 games and saw a takeover happen twice. In both cases it was done just to do it and not because it was the best move. Maybe further expansions will have more takeover action.

When I was playing with the second expansion we didn't even get out the cubes for it.

I got the 2nd expansion to Race, read the instructions and have yet to try it. It scares me, they've completely changed the fundamentals of the game. It's insanely interactive now, no?
