It seems that there might be some interest at my new work place in doing some lunchtime gaming now and again. One of my new colleagues is a dedicated Go player and another spent his Christmas holidays playing Carcassonne and Settlers. So I don't think there would be much appetite for Ameritrash games. So in order to please both me and my colleagues I'm looking for games that are:

* simple to teach
* play in 60 minutes or less
* offer medium-heavyweight strategy
* feature plenty of scope for player interaction
* support both 2 and multiple players and scale well

I have a horrible feeling the ideal game I'm looking for is probably Alien Frontiers which is obviously unavailable right now. Any other ideas?

Hive fits your criteria perfectly except that it is only a 2 player game.

Check out Formula 1 (not to be confuse with Forumal D) by Waddingtons/Parker Brothers. I don't think of it as a Euro, but you might. It's a really fun racing game with simple rules but still works your brain. You can play with 2-6 but I think you'd want at least 4.

Age of Empires is too long for your lunch hour.

Caracassone with a few of the early expansions- Traders & Builders, Inns & Cathedrals, is pretty good. Depending on how many players you have you might finish in an hour if people don't take forever.

I'm not sure that "medium/heavy" and "60 minutes" go together, but here are some lighter suggestions:

The Bucket King (need to play with common variants that make this awesome)
R-Eco
You're Bluffing (if played with speeding-up variants)
Hey! That's my fish! (laugh if you want)
Category 5/Slide 5
Coloretto
Circus Flohcati
Tutankhamen
Rumis/Blokus 3-D
Ubongo
Chicago Express (would be cutting it close, timewise)
Ra the Dice Game
Snow Tails (possibly)
Uptown
For Sale
Basari
Turn the Tide
Cartagena (I or II)
Kingdoms

Innovation. Not sure it's "simple" to teach, though.

Hansa Teutonica: quick, tense, interactive, relatively heavy for this amount of time, easy to learn, hard to master. Supports 2-5 players (2 with special rules). VERY euro but terrific game.

I'd go with CITADELS. That's what our group has settled on. I wouldn't count on an hour. You get 50 min max with folks showing up late / leaving early for meetings. We've also had success with ROLL THROUGH THE AGES and MODERN ART.
