You should just woodburn your favorite game onto the table. I am sure the wife would approve.

I need to buy a bigger table.

When do you think technology will allow us to cheaply incorporate a dining table sized digital gaming accessory like this:

Eventually, won't this technology get cheap enough to do it? Or, will we be using holographic projectors and ditching tablets and monitors?

Right now you can replicate that setup for $300-500 on the cheap end, with an existing computer. A wiimote, IRpen, and a LED projector. However, most boardgame companies have not embraced digital versions yet.

I have a similar rule, The Rule of Thumb.

This states that you are not allowed to be near the top of the table unless you have thumbs.

It is mostly an excuse to yell at the cats when they get curious.

See, I look at that and think "Is picking up and delivering so interesting that I must go 40 spaces and 3 linear feet to do so?"

I really like games that manage to do more with less. Space included.

Yeah, and also don't forget that almost every single one of those piles will have a discard pile that players will be able to/need to rifle through at any time to see if there are cards available that have already been revealed at those locations.

And they fit right next to their decks and are easy to grab and pickup.

I don't think anyone's suggesting the game doesn't fit on your table. We can see the photo after all. I guess the players have their player board/areas off the ends.

SuperflyTNT wrote: In another thread, Nate mentioned he would like to get all the Talisman expansions, and it reminded me of my rule on games' physical size: If I have to put the leaf in my table, the game is just too bloated. I believe we came up with this house rule when we played Firefly just prior to its departure. We realized that it was cumbersome to play because the board and cards took up so much room we had to work around the bits just to play, which sucked and began to kill the mood,

My table is 5' x 3.5' without the leaf, 5' square with it. If I need 25 square feet to play a game, I'm just not doing it.

Thoights?

We may have the exact same table. Same dimensions anyway.

Generally, I agree. I can sit 6 people comfortably and squeak by with 8, but if the game board is taking up 4' x 4' on my 5' x 5' table then it doesn't matter how many I can sit because nobody is going to have any room to put their stuff and being crowded with your bits is no fun at all.

HOWEVER. Some games are worth it. I will totally grab as much random furniture as possible to slap-dash a table-looking surface together if it means I get to play an awesome game. That's a pretty short list though.
