Some pointers:
a) My group is composed of exactly 3 people. This is why Genoa goes unplayed and why I haven't bought Cosmic Encounter.
b) One of the players hates the feeling of being "out of the game" and I dislike it too. So this is something to avoid
c) We are very competitive players. We met through Netrunner tournaments and we like discussing strategy and potential moves.
d) I would like a game in which you build/own something and have a position on the board.
e) Some games I like are: Netrunner, Steam (favourite game), The Republic of Rome, 18XX. Martin Wallace is my favourite designer. I like a lot of old, monster stuff I'll never play (Civilization, Dune, Revolution: The Dutch Revolt etc.)
f) Some of the games my group plays that I like: Chicago Express, Tragedy Looper, Blood Rage, Terraforming Mars Also a bunch of ok-ish coop games.
g) I like games which are very interactive and a bit mean.
Some stuff I'm considering:
Antiquity
The Great Zimbabwe
Three Kingdom Redux (Told the core game is great, but a bit underdeveloped)
Pax Porifiana/Pax Renaissance
A Handful of Stars (Looks _great_ but I haven't heard anything about it until yesterday. I think my group likes deckbuilding, too)
Yspahan (Cute, but I need the expansion too and that's a pain in the ass to get)
Continental Divide (Moar train game, I guess)
Thoughts?

CYCLADES is really fun with three, and post-game breakdowns are very entertaining. There is some serious gamesmanship to found here with the auction vs per-round-player-powers and swingy beast deck moves. Looks nice too.SuperflyTNT wrote: Tiny Epic Galaxies

Track down STAR WARS RISK: CLONE WARS edition, with the Hutts, Rebels, and Empire factions. Dynamite game.

I still refuse to believe this game has ever actually been played by anyone.

Triump and Tragedy, Churchill: Good suggestions, though I'm very burned out on WW2 right now so I would rather not.
Millennium Blades: This is...extremely meta. Seems very similar to other games we frequently play, though.
Tiny Epic Galaxies: Two of us positively hate Tiny Epic Westerns so I would rather not.
Cyclades: I hear this is very focused on attacking instead of building, but I haven't been really explained what the game is about
Nexus Ops, Tikal, Duel of Ages II, Tikal: Not my thing
This is my fear, actually. I prefer games with long-term planning if simply because most games we play are tactical. I just want something more than checking the board each turn and trying to push foward with what seems best at that given moment.Gary Sax wrote: I think the pax games would go over well with you guys, but may be overly tactical/responsive.
There are groups around here that play it or games like it but they are not my kind of groups. Same problems as train gamers, really.Michael Barnes wrote: >>>Revolution: The Dutch Revolt

By the way, any recommendations? I would love to hear your take, even if it's just to tell me not to get one of the games I listed

I just looked through my collection for best 3 player, deeper games. These aren't perfect but here are some:
Theseus plays well with three, it's just a tad too tactical compared to the deeply strategic play with 2
Runewars---solid with three, great base orders engine IMHO
Clash of Monarchs works with three. A bit off the wall but giving Prussia/Britain to the same player and Russian/France and then Austria to separate players works. I think this is a GREATLY overlooked deep CDG wargames.

Ystari do a lot of games best with 3, Yspahan will be too light for you guys I suspect.

This is a damn good recommendation. ESPECIALLY with three guys that are into TREK.
