What Happened to Checkers?

I remember my grandfather had a conversation with a local businessman who owned a hardware store. The businessman said his store was facing hard times and my grandfather chuckled and said,

"If you want to bring in the business, set up some checkerboards on some barrels"

The businessman chuckled and said well they don't play checkers much anymore. That was years ago.

I am a big fan of classic TV and you see them playing checkers a lot on classic TV but not today.

Today I never hear or see anyone playing checkers. When I moved to Texas I was surprised how big dominoes was here but checkers was never seen. Are there any areas of the country or even international areas where checkers is still played a lot?

Does checkers need a makeover? A new sexy image to attract new players?

Perhaps a game like this, Beer checkers! King me, fill it up!!!

Sometime in the late '70s, Backgammon took Checkers out back and shot it in the head, gangland execution-style. Seriously, once those magnetic travel backgammon things hit the market, Checkers was history.

My theory is two-fold and happened in the 70s and 80s:

1) checkers became thought of as just a children's game not suitable for adult tastes and was banished to kiddy land

2) video killed the radio star. I mean kids have so many other distractions these days that checkers holds no excitement for them

I rememeber growing up in the 70s we had as a family maybe half a dozen checker sets over the years including my own set of Dinosaur Checkers. I know you can still buy checkers in stores, but I can't imagine who would do such a thing when there are so many other more interesting games to buy out there.

But now that I think about it, it should be more popular than it is. I mean really.....an abstractish game with simple round, colored (originally wooden) pieces......its so....Euroish!

All I want to know is, did the old dude in the picture up there save any plaid for the rest of us?

Haven't you heard? It's been solved. http://technology.newscientist.com/article/dn12296-checkers-solved-after

No self-respecting eurogamer would be seen playing that now.

The game itself is now practiced only by 6-year olds and a subculture willing to exercise a sad devotion to an ancient religion. http://www.usacheckers.com/index.php For $25 you can get a wallet-sized membership card and a bi-monthly bulletin. (Hey, by the way, when is F:AT going to issue membership cards?)

Marion Tinsley, of course, was and always will be The Man.

Now, I need to get back to exercising my own sad devotions.

I thought they repackaged Checkers as the GIPF project...
