You get GPS coordinates and go find a hole in a log out in the woods where somebody has left a couple of Star Trek commemorative plates. And then you leave something like a copy of Thomas Pynchon's Vineland. At least that's what happened the time I went out with a friend of mine to do it.

Like I said, nerds.

Re: Do You Geocache?

It's official. When Atlanteon goes on clearance at Tanga, it's our solemn duty to replace as many Geocached items with Atlanteon as possible.

I geocached once, but I started in my buddy's living room and ended up in his pool room. There was a pipe there. That's as far as we made it.

Someone hides something outdoors somewhere and posts the GPS coordinates on a site for other people to find it.

Thus far, I am the only one who has passed Andy's challenge.

Reconfirm distance, one syllable only, please.

Is that what it has turned into? They used to just contain a small notebook and a pen. The people that found it signed it and left messages. The ones on trails frequently contained advice for other hikers/bikers, like where to find drinking water.

There are all kinds of little prizes now, mostly for the kids? But there are also coins and trackers and all kinds of other fancy nerd shit that you can log on the website and see how far it goes and all that. Some of that stuff is pretty neat, but we haven't bothered with anything besides finding/signing in a long time. I think it's pretty sweet if you have kids though.

That's how I remember it. Those were the days.
