Yes, in the base game fighters were at first your cannon fodder or extra hit points, but you can get them a +2 to hit from techs or even +3 with the right alien race, making them basically your best ships, even compared to war suns because (for the same price) 24 dice hitting on 7+ is better than 3 dice hitting on 3+.

The first expansion added a new tech which made destroyers twice as good, so they then got 4 free shots with an extra +1 at fighters before the normal combat and IIRC there were also a few anti-fighter action cards.

TI3 encourages turtling even more than Eclipse, particularly in the base game, where you concentrate to pick up the Imperial card as often as possible in best worker placement fashion.

It's a downside that in the TI3 base game, that "Imperial / Initiative / Technology" triad walks its way around the table. For me, the cure is worse than the disease, in that the optional cards cure of Imperial II takes the clock off the game, and you can now do nothing for a long time. I'll grant that players don't sit down to TI3 for The Greatest 90-Minute Experience In Gaming, but that sticks another hour or two on an already-long game.

I disagree with this, at least with experienced players. My TI3 games usually finish in under 5 hours with 6 players. I'm the worst and least experienced player of the group and I've still got 7 games under my belt. In my experience the games usually end a full turn, before I expect them to because players are gobbling up huge swaths of VP before I can get much past 5. Last game I played the player to my right hit his secret objective, a level 2 objective and grabbed an artifact on the same turn to go from 6 to 11.

So Nate is the only person who's played both Eclipse and Clash of Cultures?

I've played both and I love both. I probably like Clash of Cultures a LITTLE more, but only a little more. They're both great games.

Please refer to my post on page three. Clash of Cultures is a much better game.

I own (and have played) both. I think that Clash of Cultures is better. Eclipse approaches it with the expansion, but I still think that Clash of Cultures is the better game.

played both, in the long run, i expect clash to be the better game. It has more variety in the decisions you can make and is less determined by the tile draw.

edit, why is this not a trashdome!?

So are you guys all saying that Eclipse and Clash are directly comparable to each other? I've been thinking about those two and Runewars, and I've been wondering - is there a lot of overlap between those three games?

I don't think anyone is running Trashdome currently.

Sure, I'm willing to throw the people I've played with under the bus, for being a bit passive. :)

For my group, that Imperial I loop around the board definitely is a better game clock. It seems to push my TI3 group harder than Imperial II does. But a lot of the group I generally play TI3 with doesn't like Imperial I, because it feels too gamey or whatever. So Imperial II gets played a lot. And speaking strictly for myself, it makes me a bit more cautious, thinking, "If my fleet gets wrecked, I'm roadkill, and get to lay there dead for who knows how many turns."
