I traded for 42 WFB Vampire Counts Skeleton Warriors...each 8 came with a Standard Bearer and Musician, but I don't know if any are Champions. How can I tell?

In WFB games you will likely be dealing with conversions, proxies, etc. There's a rule called 'counts as'. If you want one of those warriors to be a champion find a way to make it obvious to your opponent (ex: put bat wings on the helmet, special shields, etc). Then you have your champion.

Depending on what edition figures you have, there may not be any specific champion models. There certainly weren't in 5th/6th when I was actively playing - I had to mod my own to make them stand out. I chose to do it with a little bit of armour plating.

Also, what are they doing in eights? Unless the rules have changed very significantly in the latest edition, you want to be fielding them in blocks of 20-25 ...

If you're playing 8th edition, you probably want a group of like 40 or 50. Yeah, you read that right. I don't play Vampire Counts so I'm not 100% sure about how they play, but I would probably just run with the standard bearer, maaaaaybe the musician if you feel like getting tricky with your movement but skeletons are the type of scrubs you just want to throw in to combat ASAP to tie something up while you ignore it or flank it. Just run them 5 wide and as deep as possible to maintain steadfast.

As others said, you just need a champion to stand out from everyone else in the group. So just give him a cooler helmet, shield, or weapon or paint shit slightly different. As far as wanting larger groups but having a lot of command models, just chuck them in the back, nobody but the super anal will give a shit. Can't speak for tournaments or anything though.

It's not 8s, it's 10s with one Standard Bearer and Musician per 2 ranks, or so it appears. I'm pretty sure that the ones with the blue axes are the Champions. They're the only ones with the axes.

Shit's ridiculous. Screw GW for not mandating a specific identifiable characteristic.

'Spiky Bitz' is the determining characteristic....until it is 'Moar Skullz'.

I am not usually OK with victim blaming but if you play GW games you get what you deserve.

I'm not much for agreeing with you, but alas, in this case, I have no choice. Part of the reason I can agree is that I'm not actually playing any GW games with the models - I'm using them for other games but I got 42 and need maybe 20, so I wanted to eBay the stuff and describe it well.

So yeah, if you play games like Warhammer Quest or Space Hulk you...wait...

Pete, as others have mentioned, depending on the edition, there may not be an obvious champion model. This is the current standard for VC Skeleton Warriors (as opposed to Tomb King Skeleton Warriors): www.games-workshop.com/gws/catalog/produ...a&prodId=prod1050046

The champ is to the left of the musician in the front rank. The way you tell them apart is that the champ generally has the best looking gear (weapon, shield, helmet, etc.) Of course, as the listing states, there are OPTIONS for Champion, Musician, and Standard Bearer, so it's often (especially with skeletons, as their gear is modeled to look decayed and/or aged) the case that you simply have to determine who the champ is. The only way to tell a champ in a unit of Clanrats (Skaven), for example, is a tiny ridge of spikes that you can place on their helmet. Otherwise, they're just like any other Clanrat (which Clanrat champions are, except that they can keep your Grey Seer from being challenged...) So, if you're selling them and you have a couple models that look slightly different, you're perfectly OK with calling them "Champions". The buyer may or may not use them as such and you're not deceiving them in any way.

Also if a unit is armed with specific weapons (spears or halberds), the champion might have a regular weapon instead, such as in the example from Jackwraith's link.
