I'm thinking about dropping one under the tree this year. The ipad is likely out due to cost. For what it's worth all of my co-workers are saying the 9in HD Nook is the better way to go anyway. I'm sure the wife and kids will want to do a lot of things with it, but I'd only be interested in TITAN. Is the TITAN app a game for the ipad only? Can you play it on the Kindle or Nook?

Do y'all have any other suggestions? This is only for general home use. Movies, games, books, etc.

TITAN is iOS only. Don't sweat that man. The tablet should be for everyone. It's basically a new TV, eReader, and laptop in one.

You need to pay for quality--you don't need to pay for Apple quality, but don't skimp on the tablet. There is some real dogshit out there. If you are committed to an Apple ecosystem, get the new iPad Mini with Retina display.

NEXUS 7 is the bomb if Android is your thing. Also consider a Kindle HDX 7". I would get 32GB minimum in all cases, but you can make 16GB work if you don't mind management (i.e. deleting stuff to make room for stuff).

I fear Barnes & Noble's future, and the future of the Nook. And I believe that Titan is only on Apple.

I considered that, but I assume the lifespan on any of these tables is, what, 18mos? We can get by if the Nook is the way to go for now.

I'm equally concerned your intellectual content could go with it if B&N goes under or gets sold to someone that doesn't see advantage to keeping them open. If that happens, anything you've purchased through them has a very murky future. Your platform may survive 18 months, but your digital rights to apps, books and movies are designed to last much longer and to appear on future platforms.

I have a Kindle Fire that works very nicely and costs $140. I'm much more of a reader than a gamer so it's the right product for me personally. I'm also much more comfortable with Amazon's long-term survival prospects, so my purchased movies and books (and a few apps) are more likely to come pre-installed on my next tablet and the one after that and the one after that. For what it's worth.

All that said I think Apple is going to be around for a long time too. But I think entry price for them is $349 plus tax. Didn't make sense for me since I'm not much of a video gamer.

Won't be doing games for the most part either, except a few basic ones like angry birds and the like (titan was just a treat for me, ACTS is fine).

Folks around here are saying that the Kindle web browser (silk) is terrible and a main reason they prefer the flexibility of the Nook to use chrome, firefox, etc.

Nexus 7 if you can't splurge on an iPad model to do Titan.

Silk was pretty good until Wednesday when they upgraded it and introduced a pretty ugly bug. I'll be curious to see how long until that gets fixed. Firefox Aurora supposedly runs on Fire, but I haven't taken the time to try it out.

S.

Update -- just installed Firefox Aurora on my Kindle, took about ten minutes, appears to run beautifully on it.

I splurged and got my wife a Nexus 10 for her birthday and she really seems to enjoy it. My account on it has the Nueroshima Hex demo and Ogre War Room.

I love love love my iPad and the kids use it all the time, so I don't see it much.

I got mine ~~CHEAP AS FIZZZUKK~~ factory reconditioned last Christmas (or maybe the year before?)...iPad 2. Still works awesome. Think I paid 299 for it.

I got my wife a nexus 7 tablet last Christmas, and she loves it. I would highly recommend it for cost and quality.
