My 6 year old son has spent the past year playing Super Mario World on the weekend. He's about three stages away from unlocking all of the levels in the game (already beat Bowser). Then I'm going to tell him about Special World. I've never seen special world as I didn't play this game that much back in the day.

Anyway, his cousins came over today and accidentally erased his game!! He's absolutely gutted.

So, I'm trying to play through a shit ton of levels so it isn't so bad for him. It's late at night, I'm playing SNES, pounding sodas, listing to some punk mix tape (playlist). 1992...

Fast forward a few years and get to Yoshi's Island. That game was so damn good.

Oy! Using some online guides, I've blown through and opened up 69 stages. I've also revisited some early 90's albums I hadn't heard in decades (Billy Idol's Cyberpunk, anyone?). Though it's been fun, I can't continue anymore. I don't know how many stages are in this game, but this seems fairly close to where he was.

Yeah, he wants Yoshi's Island, but I told him only after he finishes the Mario game he already has. Another reason this had to get restored. He's been working towards Yoshi's Island since last Christmas.

No wonder children are so soft and coddled now, losing your save and rebuilding is an important part of growing up *washes doritos down with mtn dew*

You can beat the game in about 20 minutes from the start if you know what to do. Takes some skilled flying, but totally doable. I used to do it everyday to unwind.

I was not super-popular.

Sounds like an awesome Friday night. Jealous. I forgot how much game there is to Super Mario World. Such a gem.

We had a similar thing happen back in March. Some friends came over (Kindergarten at the time) and they accidently erased his save. He was only about 20 stages in at the time, so he rebuilt. We only allow a few hours on the weekend for video-games, so no way am I going to have him spend what'll take the next year on a do-over to get to where he was.

With both controller A and B able to interact with the menu screen it's a real pain in the ass for noobs to come over. He'll want to play two-player with them and as he moves the curser down to his save, the noob will just be pressing buttons because they're young/and or impatient. This is likely what's caused the erasing twice.

I've since suggested to him, that with friends he should probably stick to just playing some two-player specific games that can't be erased or that'll not suck if so. TMNT in Time, Tetris Attack, Mario Kart, etc.
