Games that "fired" other games

There's a list in Boardgamegeek of games that replaced other games, that made people say "Well, I won't need that old game now that I have this one!". This is a remake of that thread.

Combat Commander fired Lock 'n Load Band of Heroes

I always have a hard time coming up with games that are strictly better than other games in a similar niche because there are almost always situations to which that older game is better suited.

That said, Malifaux Second Edition fired every other minis game for me, including X-Wing, Warmachine, and the GW dreck. Malifaux may not be the best in every category, but it's miles ahead by all the metrics I actually care about.

I guess I could also say that Cosmic Encounter fired Bang! in the light/medium, mid-sized group category. Even though Cosmic is decades older, for some reason I foolishly waited to play it until recently. I've wasted years playing lesser games!

Magic and Cosmic Encounter pre-emptively fired everything else.

Pax Porfiriana fired all other card tableau building games I've played.

Clash of Cultures annihilated FFG's Civilization.


I'm finding more "older" games are better than newer similar games. "Preemptively fired" might be the right term:
El Grande is still one of the best area control games.
Cosmic Encounter is still the best at what it does.
Warrior Knights is still better than A Game of Thrones
Starcraft is still the best space warfare game.
Talisman is still the best roll-n-move (and still among the best adventure games).

Fuck this topic. I hate this meme-ass bullshit. This is the kind of tripe I expect to see in a Geeklist on BGG with everyone telling me how much better Eclipse is than any game ever invented. Maybe we can start a fucking twitter hash tag dovoted to it.

And for the record Disk Wars can't fucking touch playing Scipio against Hasdrubal in C&C.
