Anyone else see the announcement today of a spiritual successor to Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri? I only hopped on the Civilization train with 4, so never had a chance to play Alpha Centauri, but I'm pretty excited.

Looks like it's coming out this year too.

Here's a link to the trailer

Alpha Centauri is still one of the best games ever made. Dunno if it really needs an update to be honest...it's one of those that got it right the first time. Mostly because it was built on Civ2, which is pretty close to being the greatest game of all time.

Replied by ufe on topic Re: Civilization: Beyond Earth
I know some people thought that dumbed it down a bit too much, but I thought Firaxis did a pretty good job with the recent XCOM*, and Civ 5 is my most played game on Steam by far, so I have pretty high hopes for this.

*Never played the original there either. Wasn't big on PC games in the 90's.

I think Firaxis still has it. Their streamlining has kept the best of all the games they've remade... they are excellent editors.

I'm really excited about this. Alpha Centauri is so fucking good (better than Civ IMHO). I want to see them really capture what was great about the original and ditch a lot of the micromanagement grit.

So this is neither a game developed by Sid Meier nor is it a Civilization game. Oh, game industry.

Anyways is Alpha Centauri really worth playing? I've been told it's practically Civilization 2.5 which doens't look too appealing to me, so...

Alpha Centauri is good enough to spend the $6 on it at GOG.com. The gameplay is still good but the interface hasn't aged all that well. I was big into Civ2, skipped Civ3, and played a good amount of Civ4. Civ5 never really grabbed me. If that little tidbit of background helps: I still think Alpha Centauri is the most fun of the group.

I have never ever ever been able to play a Civ game. Going back to Civ 1, I got overwhelmed almost right out the gate, having no idea what I should be doing. If I got more than three cities I'd forget about them and discover one had been making triremes for 400 years because I'd forgotten to give it new orders.

I loved SimCity 2000, but that one was right on the edge of what I could comfortably manage (and honestly, any more management needed an I'd want a health plan included.) SC 3000 I tried and gave up on. I haven't paid attention to a simulation since then.

HOWEVER, I grabbed Civ Rev for the iPad and have now completed TWO games on it! TWO! Granted, I'm playing on titty baby level, but that's still way more than I ever did before. So I may be looking into other iPad options soon.

^Yeah, you definitely don't want to play the original Alpha Centuari, then. It's micromanagement extreme.

Civ 5 eliminated some of the micromanagement, though not all, if you see it on sale on Steam for cheap.

The video doesn't suggest it is much like Alpha Centauri, where earth factions are fighting each other on an unknown planet. Looks more like Civ..... in spaaaaace.

I would pick up AC from GOG which also has the Alien Crossfire expansion. I played countless games of Alpha Centauri in the day. It is immersive, with a great back story.

Matrix Games do a Civ in Space called Pandora which might be worth looking at. Not marketed as heavy as this game, but worth a look. Same kind of idea.

This was an odd coincidence for me, as I just installed Alpha Centauri (from GoG) the day before this announcement.

Must have been something in the air...
