SaMoKo wrote: Gears gets shat on because it's the epitome of a dudebro game, but it was innovative and requires more planning and positioning than many shooters on the market. It and Crackdown were two amazing franchises that MS started this gen, it's too bad they lost that creativity as the console aged. The X1, so far, looks to be heading back to that feel, but they have new blood at the head of the division.

Gear of War 2/3/Judgment are really GOOD dudebro games, though - possibly the best. I disagree with Gary that there's anything self-aware, ironic or reflexive about Gears. I've played through all of the campaigns multiple times solo and co-op, and furthermore this is Cliff Bleszinkski we're talking about, who may be a nice enough guy but generally comes across like a dudebro meathead. Nope, it's male fantasy testosterone opera for the masses, played 100% straight, which honestly makes it even funnier than if they actually were trying to wink at the audience. Anyway, great games with fantastic multiplayer, especially Horde mode in 2 & 3 and the class-based Overrun team mode in Judgment.

Black Barney wrote: Why is he playing Alpha Protocol when there are actual good and amazing games to be played instead?

It's like when I started playing Bullet Witch for no reason at all

To each their own, dawg. Alpha Protocol is one of my three favorite games from last gen, and in the wake of initally tepid reviews it's justifiably become an enormous cult classic. IIRC you were shilling pretty hard for Mass Effect earlier in the thread, which I found to be the absolute epitome of trite, generic, store-brand paint-by-numbers sci-fi. To each their own.

Nobody should be playing Bullet Witch, though - that much is certain.

Yeah but Mass Effect is univerally praised with awards, sales and all that. Alpha Protocol was universally pandered, with good reason. It was a good idea just a failed execution. "enormous cult classic"?? It's the next Rocky Horror!

It's good that you are recommending your favourite games to Bull tho, that's what we should all be doing.

To be fair, I'd heard of Alpha Protocol prior to this thread and started playing it because the concept sounded most appealing to me. I've picked up a bunch of the games that got recs in this thread and you've all been real helpful, but having a stck of unplayed games now, I've gotta start somewhere.
