The Occult Chronicles

From time to time, I check in on people who made stuff (music, games, movies, etc) that I have enjoyed, to see if they have done anything new. And so I found myself looking up Cryptic Comet (of Armageddon Empires) to see what they had done lately, and came across The Occult Chronicles.

The Occult Chronicles is a turn-based, roguelike-style game that you play solo on your PC, even if you are still somehow running Windows 98. You play a person who is investigating a big haunted house where you can die or go insane. Combat and skill resolution involves drawing and playing Tarot cards. You explore the randomly-generated house, trying to level up enough to handle a big threat which is gradually escalating on its own timetable, involving things like vampires or cultists or maybe a zombie horde. From the sounds of it, play is on a Dungeonquest level of lethality, and you can even lose the game in the opening minutes.

Has anybody here tried The Occult Chronicles? The game is only $20, but money is tight these days so I don't want to waste it on something I won't enjoy. The reviews that I found were mixed but generally favorable. I really enjoyed Armageddon Empires, though sometimes a big game would stall out after too many resources were exhausted near the end.

It's from the same folk who made Solium Infernum which is an excellent PC game on the battle for Hell by various Lords of Hell. Really good fun.

I have Occult Chronicles as well and it's fine if you like rogue like things. Personally, I find Tales of Maj Eyal to be a better, more expansive game. Not sure Occult Chronicles is really worth $20. Solium Infernum is much better IMO.

On fun rogue likes what about Desktop Dungeon? That is fucking addictive, fast and fun.
