(Spinning off from the RPGs - Collecting Only thread)

I don't run a lot of RPGs and have settled on DCC as my main game. Mainly because I like the absurdness and lethality of them. DCC adventures work for me at this time because they adventures are cheap (only $10 - an easy thing to grab when in my FGLS), short, and easy to run. They are very old school so are fun to play with a group of us aging role-players. I also like the awareness of how deadly the adventures are. We as players expect our characters to die. This makes the game feel a bit more competitive (like Descent I suppose) seeing how long we'll last instead of being upset when something happens to our pc. I'm not into world building or long character narratives with DCC, but more focusing on the adventure at hand.

All that said, I've been pointed to Harley Stroh as the author who most consistently provides high quality adventures for DCC. (The recent Purple Planet sounds awesome: tenfootpole.org/ironspike/?p=2584 )

So, beyond DCC, who are the current 'best' authors of published adventures? Who's doing work that should be worth a read even if one doesn't play the game?

Monte Cook wrote Night of Dissolution, an absolutely great adventure for D&D 3.5, but that was a few years back. I keep meaning to look into his more recent work with Numenera.

only kidding, but you might find these interesting.

On a more serious note I would recommend;

Stonehell Dungeon by Michael Curtis. This is a good old style crawl with a big dungeon.

Anything by Gabor Lux. For my money he is the best adventure writer I have read. Most of his work that i've seen has been published either in Fight On! or Knockspell fanzines.

I like Jeff Talanian's adventures quite a lot for his Astonishing Swordsmen and Sorcerers of Hyperborea system. He recently released Ghost Ship of the Desert Dunes on to rpgnow and the Carnel Crypt of the Sightless Serpent is excellent.

Gabor Lux/Melan, David Bowman, Calithena, Matt Finch, Peter Spahn, Kramer, Patrick Stuart and Rafael Chandler are all VERY safe auto-buys. Also, anything in the Psychedelic Fantasies line.

Just skimmed real quick but those look awesome! A dungeon inside a dead whale? Rad!
