Hey guys. I've been playing Mario Maker---we should share levels. I'll put up any levels I'm modestly satisfied in, maybe we can share feedback to each other. The current search/database systems sucks my balls and makes it impossible to find fresh, good levels. How many fucking no button press levels do we need?

It's no secret in my house right now that this is the only game I want. But alas, it is not to be for the time being. New house, new baby, no time for Daddy toys... but I'm working on it, I'm trying to find some sneaky way to get in there I just have to come up with some good bit of reasoning and band cash then ace my Charisma check. If I can do that my wife might even suggest I go buy it.

The kids have messed with it a bit but I haven't spent any real time with it. It doesn't help that the kids have systematically lost every stylus I've ever given them.

I think the automatic levels are dumb. People spend so much time, and for what, really?

No doubt.

What making these levels (which is hard) makes you realize is just how much like a GM a level designer is. Like, if you think about the levels in Mario 3 or something, all the levels have a theme so they are memorable. But they almost never fall to the level of being a gimmicky with one way to do them. Most of the hard levels I've played in the 100 mario mode are simply gimmicks, they aren't hard levels in the vein of a normal mario game.

Sadly the highest ranked maps fall into three categories:
1. "famous" Youtubers/Twitch streamers
2. DONT MOVE!!!!!!!!!!!!
3. Stupidly hard gimmicks

There are some awesome levels that feel like they came right out of the original games. I have been toying with Mario 2 inspired Mario 3 maps, but have yet to unlock everything. My only map uploaded shows these issues but was designed to feel more like a classic level than a test of skill:
Fastigium (E183-0000-003F-AF54)
It will be updated soon though.

I highly recommend one of my friends Mario 3 maps:
Sky-High Hijinks (FA55-0000-0039-8FEB)
It does not have the Nintendo Shine, but it is a really well made map, not unlike those of World 5

Apparently you have to really look outside, start following makers once you like their levels, using twitter, etc. Once you have a good follow list I guess you can play a huge amount of solid, cool content.

But Nintendo is really fucking this up with its search/curating functions. They need to be robust and this thing would run itself.

I'll check those levels out and follow you.

When we get this, it's mostly going to be so that I can make levels to play with the kids and then also for them to fool around with making their own. I don't really care about playing PewDiePie's favorite levels, Super Cockio Bros. World 6-9 or IMPOSSSIBLE U WILL DIE levels.

Nintendo doesn't get search, categorization, or curation. Their eShops (3DS, etc) are a prime example.

Nintendo did bugger up searching and curating, but atleast they made it so you have to beat the stage before you upload it. So every map is beatable, it may just take a couple hundred tries.

Yeah, I've played a couple of hundred mario challenges and some of the levels are just miserable---especially ones that just have you do a little precise jumping. Right now people are hitting the hop across a big gap w/o landing hard.

Finally got a pro controller. What a difference. Night and day. Wish I could throw out this gamepad but it's necessary for a bunch of things. What a POS it is.

Followed Polygon's stream, which has developers come and make levels. Most recent one is hard but fun, though the clown thing is twitchy enough where it's irritating.

I know these were discussed before, but if you have some time to kill, the videos of Giant Bomb making crowdsourced levels are pretty entertaining.

It's fun watching Patrick Klepek trying to figure out how to beat these levels going in blind.
