I just bought this on the PC (Steam). I started playing but basically (first 'adventure') I got a title like "What's in the Basement?" and then some random symbols generated and then I had to match the symbols to solve the problem. No story, no fluff just matching symbols. Am I missing something because right now, this is looking like a pile of shit and not thematic in any way? More like elaborate Yahtzee with weird symbols.

Have I not got far enough into it? After three of these 'exciting' totally unthematic adventures I was ready to pack it in. Reminds of the totally unthematic marvel dicemasters where some amazing backstory is totally ruined by rolling a few dice and saying (in a suitably dramatic voice) "Yeah! I got you with that gigantic punch". What an absolute load of shite.

EDIT: In the interests of being 'fair' I don't own this boardgame at all.

It's a puzzle/press your luck game, both in app and board form. It's not bad for what it is.

I love the app. I've played it probably 200 times. I own all the DLC (or at least did). I found it to be incredibly thematic...you're fighting baddies and whatnot.

OK so here's what happens for one of the 'adventures':

A card appears that says not more than 5 words, something like 'What's under the stairs?'. On the card is 3 circles. Each circle has a graphic of a magnifying glass superimposed on the circle (because its an investigation). Next to the magnifying glass will be, say, 2 skull symbols. I roll dice. If I get at least two skulls, that part of the investigation is solved. Is there any text to tell me what I 'solved'? No. Is there a graphic to give me a hint of what I just did? Did I kill something? No idea. Move to the next part of the investigation involving 5 magnifying glass symbols (I think) roll the dice, did I get them? Yes. So that part of the investigation disappears. So what exactly did I discover? No fucking idea (sorry Shellie but this really is a shit app). Repeat ad infinitum with NO FLAVOUR TEXT anywhere to be seen.

This is why I think I may have been missing something. Like some fucking content, for example.

That's the entirety of the game, whether it's the digital or cardboard version.

So not even the flavour text of Arkham Horror?

That's shit.

No, no, as we've all learned flavour text isn't theme!
Elder Sign is actually intensely thematic because after playing it for an hour you start to go insane.

If you want you can click on each task on the location and get more flavour text. I rarely bother because I think the illustrations and titles gives me a good idea of what's happening.

But apart from that all three expansions add some cool decisions that ties in nicely with the stories. I think it's a great app - especially with the Cthulhu and Ithaqua expansions.

If you sat next to me while reading some Lovecraft, I'd actually go for it.

You do realise flavour text is what makes a story, not friggin' rolling dice.

I guess you discovered you're a crummy investigator if you don't know what you did but might have killed someone in the process.
