So, first, allow me to say Fuck Apple.

Why, when I loved Apple until today?

Let me tell you why: If you buy an app in the App Store, and for any reason the publisher no longer sells it, you may NEVER re-download it. So, I've lost like 10 apps now that I am going through my emailed receipts.

Fuck that shit.

The only current way to not lose apps forever is to back up all your apps onto your PC/Mac through iTunes and then restore from there. This is a significant policy change and the reason I hate buying anything digital.

/end rant.

Today I decided to finally update my lowly iPad 2 to iOS 9. I had been on 6. It's functioning, but it's sluggish. Not that I'm surprised.

I held off on updating my iPad 2 off of iOS 6 because I didn't want it to become more sluggish than it already was. Then, I started finding that no new apps (and most updates to existing ones) required at least iOS 7 or 8. I'd probably be willing to upgrade to 7, since the performance hit wouldn't be quite as bad. Except now my only official option is to move straight to 9.

So my iPad sits unused, and I just use my work laptop or phone for idle browsing.

Man, I wish I could lose apps forever. I have so much junk that I would love to see the end of, but Apple WON'T let me get them good and gone.

And speaking of Apple and backups...

Apple Stole My Music. No, Seriously.

I know. As soon as I read that I was like "They've hit Peak Apple and it's all downhill from here on out." Microsoft may be the "evil empire" to some people, but I can still download games I bought 12 years ago.

Doing a reset might help. Also, I switched to a faster browser, which also made a difference. I've rooted the iPad 2 in the past, but not with iOs 9. That might help with recovering some of those lost apps. I only use the iPad for some games I've purchased, because I have gotten more comfortable with the world of Android.

I've been moving to Android, and Linux, but it sort of feels like moving from the U.S. to Cold Ware 1980's Russia. There just aren't as many choices and you spend more time that you want fixing things. "We have a choice of TWO different apps for that process comrade! Enjoy the glorious worker's revolution!"

Freedom from Apple comes at a price.

That's the one. Apple's user experience is second to none. The compromise is that it's a closed system and you have to play by their sometimes opaque and ever-changing rules.

Friend of mine has written an educational app. Android let it go though, bugs and all, but not Apple.

With them it has to be stress tested by their guys before it is ever released on the Apple Store. The code is checked by computer and actual humans. None of that happens with Android. Hence, the higher quality of app (in general).

That's why I buy only boardgames. Half my games have been out of print for 30 years and still going strong. Fuck software.
