apparently my son helped defeat a gym yesterday and he's now one of the gym leaders.

there was no end to his excitement.

I've been playing the game with my fiancée, her (soon to be our) 5 year-old-son, and our 13 month old labrador mix. I pass my phone off to the kid and get dog doodie duty* while we try to catch Ponytas in our local park. We also go downtown to hit some pokéstop strings and support local businesses that happen to be gyms or have nearby stops. My favorite feature is the eggs that just have you walk a pre-determined distance. I have yet to get a 10 km egg which hatch the rarest stuff, but she has gotten 2! Her first one popped a Scyther. Jealous.

We live in a city of about 115k which seems to be just the right size to have some places with good pokémon density and stops without creating traffic jams of crazy people.

*Can you tell that I've watched Wreck-It Ralph twice this week?

I've still been playing! Hit level 30 over this last week with bonus XP event. Up to 137 in my dex. Just a lot of walking, egg hatching, and trips to nearby parks with the dog and or family.

But I'm really disappointed in the new tracking system. Dozens of pokémon spawn in an around my apartment. Before you could see up to 9 species that were around you. If something rare showed up, like a Lapras or a Snorlax, I could find it in 3 minutes. Now, all it shows me is the Pidgey that's at the little church Pokéstop half a mile away. It's completely unusable garbage unless you're standing in a sea of pokéstops, and even then you're going to have half of your 9 slots taken up by pidgeys and rattattas.

If you're too far from any stops (I'm guessing it's around 1km), the old tracker comes back, but with such a low radius that the only things listed are within your visible radius anyway.... so you already know they're there! Aaaagh. I had gotten so good at triangulating knowing that if you walk 200m away from something, it'll pop off your list. I could find stuff quickly and it was a lot of fun. Not anymore.
