Wow! About time. Crazy news day.

I'm a big fan of the crayon rails and Iron Dragon in particular. I think I've got some threads floating around here on it.

Anyway, the new edition is finally set to arrive...
www.gametrademagazine.com/Home/1/1/58/591?articleID=182965

the original Larry Elmore ID cover is one of my all time favorite gaming lids. However....it does sort of look like a 'stiff, blue unit'.

You can't unsee it!!

Anyway, the new cover is intriguing. Sort of grim as it looks like they're harnessing the power of a captive dragon. Definitely different. Perspective on that bridge looks off. Wish the train was a little larger and more center like the original.

Those wizard certificates (the money) look like garbage though. That sort of euro-cartoony look is way overplayed in board games, IMO. I much prefer the restrained simplicity of the original and hope this isn't the final choice. Big clash with the cover. I'll toss em.

vs

This is all from the Sept issue of GMT, but I'm not sure when it drops. Guess it's soon. So much for FoD...

Besides a graphic redesign...don't expect any sort of modernization. I'm predicting the standard small load chits, paper money, and long, chill play that is standard with crayon rail games...though this one has a few more features with the foreman and ships.

Just know what you're in for here....

Edit: oh, toss whatever garbage crayons that will be in the box. You want a set of crayola dry erase. Essential for crayon rails.

More cool news. Someone at bgg posted :

BTW, looking at "Universal Distribution" list of preorders, there are two relevant products:
IRON DRAGON: MFG4607
and
IRON DRAGON EXPANSION: MFG4608

I assume these are the codes for the new edition, but I might be wrong.

Tom Wham had a pnp expansion on his website that added train raids, hiring guards to ride along, and other stuff. It all sounded fun, but Iron Dragon is already one of the longer crayon games so I never bothered. Be cool if Mayfair worked with Tom to bring some of those expansion ideas to market though.

My brother really likes train games and I'd be more inclined to play with a fantasy theme. Maybe I'll suggest it to him. Are crayon rail games any fun with just 2 players?

Yes.

Most prefer them with two, often 3 max, even if they go up to 6. Figure about an hour per player the first few times...until geography is down.

Dave and I play them two player all the time, but we also like 3 with Mike.

They are kind of multi-player, solitaire though, but in their case i find it very acceptable. Definitely games to catch up and chat over.

Maybe consider Martian Rails. It plays faster than Iron Dragon and has a neat Sci fi setting on Mars during colonization and conflict.

The rules are simple for all of them, but Iron Dragon is crayon rails on 'advanced mode'.

EURORAILS is best rails, this is known. This map, more than any other lets players use the "lean track" vs. "track everywhere" methods and have a close games. Some maps really favor one over the other.
