Fictional Games

Fictional Games was created by Shellhead
Are there any fictional games that you wish that you could play?

In the original Star Wars movie (New Hope is a suburb of Minneapolis), that holographic combat chess game looked fun.

Fritz Leiber was a chess enthusiast and wrote about chess in some of his stories. One featured a chess player who dreamed that he was playing a cosmic version of chess against an alien opponent. The board was so vast that it stretched off into infinity, and there were lots of different pieces, each with their own movement rules. At the end of the story, the chess player has vanished and the narrator finds a peculiar playing piece in the chess player's bed.

Tim Powers wrote about a strange stud poker variant in Last Call. Players would pair up with other players on each hand, and try to make the best poker hand out of their combined hand of cards. The game was called Assumption.

What fictional games do you want to play?

Cyvasse from A Game of Thrones sounds fun. Kind of like chess, Stratego or the old Amiga game Archon. Kind of surprised FFG or somebody hasn't officially put out a cyvasse game.

No question: The best fake game is ESCHATON from INFINITE JEST by David Foster Wallace. He was One Of Us.

I'd like to look at, but probably not play, The Game of County Seats (and maybe take a crack at fabricating a replacement zoning disc) and Clam Traffic Jam from The Simpsons.

As for games I would actually like to play, those would be Nuke 'Em from Robocop and The Running Man Home Game (though it's probably your typical ICS-licensed crap) from The Running Man.

1. Global Thermonuclear War, with WOPR.
2. Quidditch.
3. Laser Unicorn, from Kung Fury.
4. Don't Whiz on the Electric Fence, from Ren and Stimpy.
5. Jetan, but only with the Chessmen of Mars.
6. I'd say Jugger, from the Blood of Heroes, but it's no longer fictional...

The 3D chess set in Star Trek (TOS) always looked cool. I think that somebody actually made that game later, but like most chess variants, it never caught on.

The fictional game that I would really love to play would be The Game of Blood and Dust, from the short story of the same name by Roger Zelazny. Unfortunately, the game requires either time travel on a global scale, or a massively-detailed and fully-interactive computer simulation of the history of mankind.

The story is only three pages long, and online here:

Oh there was a cool hologramatic dog fighting game in a William Gibson short story, Spads and Fokkers.
