TOPIC: Please test my video game

Please test my video game 08 Sep 2017 14:26 #253937

I have been working on a simple video game, inspired by Tapper. It's called Record Store Nightmare. You play Rob, a record store clerk in 1984. One night, while working alone, the dead rise, as will happen.

With nothing to defend himself but a pile of records, he takes the fight to the zombies.

Anyway, the art is crude and the game is very simple, but I think it's fun. I'm looking for feedback to make sure it works properly. The help screen and game over screen still need some art, but functionally the game is complete. I am definitely looking for feedback regarding difficulty. Do you find it too easy? Too hard? Is it boring?

Feel free to be blunt. Thanks!

Youtube clip, so you can see what you're in for.

Yes, that's me, and I don't particularly like how they came out. They are too loud, so I'm working on that.

Albums spawn along the racks, and when you pick one up it replenishes your 6 albums. You can only hold one CD at a time, and it's much more rare for them to spawn.

Crawling zombies are awesome. I like the sprites for those a lot.

It needs a mechanic somewhere, classic arcade games usually have one really simple, immediate mechanic that elevates it. Think about the Pac-Man power pellet, the tractor beam in Galaga, etc. What if you had to collect records to get ammunition, but you have to SHELVE the good records. So like you would pick up records and they would form queue. When classic Record store snob records come up...like say old R.E.M., Husker Du, Slint, CAN, Stooges or whatever...those have to go to spots on the shelves and if you throw them, you stop a zombie but you LOSE points or something. The other records...maybe stuff like Debbie Gibson, Genesis, The Blue Jean Committee, Frampton Comes Alive or whatever...you just chuck those at the zombies with impunity. This would also sell the setting a lot better, and make it more appropriate to it being...a record store nightmare. More importantly, it would create a stronger sense of urgency when you have to shelve a "good" record or a string of good records in the middle of the mayhem. There could even be a strategic element here, where the order in which you pick up the records matters. If you pick up a bunch of good records, you'll be shelving more and the zombies will keep advancing so you might find yourself rushing to another lane to try to get a crap record to throw. But like getting shitty blocks in Tetris...whaddya do if all you are getting is good records? Part of the fun!

All of the above was totally ripped off from Shaun of the Dead, when they are being selective about which records to throw at the zombies.

It also seems like there is an opportunity for these zombies to be dancing to "Sussido" at some point.

Also because it's a record store, maybe every time you pick up records, the music changes to a new record? I guess that makes the game expensive with the music rights tho

Thanks for the input. I have thought about changing the song every couple of waves.... I might test that out. As for the good record / bad record idea: that is interesting and I think it could work with a tweak. Since it would be very difficult to communicate what a "bad" record is, what do you think of this concept? Among the record racks I put alphabet letters; if you pick up a record and then touch where it goes in the store, you'd get a bonus. You could still use it for ammo just like always, but if you can touch the M section after picking up Madonna, you get something. Maybe a huge boost of ammo, like an extra 6 records. Or a CD.

Well, see, you have to be a music snob to be able to discern what the good records are.

Barnes' record shelving idea is fantastic. "Sussudio" is released in '85, but the Ghostbusters theme might work. I think Ray Parker, Jr. is less litigious than Phil Collins anyhow.

Record shelving is in and working; I'll probably update the build tonight. Currently the way it works is: when you pick up a record, your ammo is restored to 6. The artist name displays in the lower right, and the letter of the rack starts to flash. If you throw a record, it stops flashing and things behave normally. But if you touch that area first, you lose one album and build up a meter towards earning a free CD. Do this 8 times and you get a free CD. I will be capping CDs at 5; if you got more than that I think it would be too powerful.

I just played a bunch of this, man. Some thoughts:
1. I love the voice over work. Need to vary it up though. Hearing "I need records" every time sucks.
"I need records" = "Shit! Out of vinyl" = "Need some platters!" = "45's or 33's...I don't care, but I need 'em" = "How can you have any killing if you don't get some discs" (in British voice like The Wall)

2. The distinctions are kind of shit for low/med/high shots, because low shots aren't effective on walkers, et al.
- If you hit a walker with a low shot or mid shot, it should be cut in half and become a crawler.
- Every shot should have a decapitation animation of some kind. Them exploding is lame.

3. Need a guitar or drum fanfare when you get discs, ideally from the depicted disc. That would be rad.

4. This should be IOS or something, primarily because you just convinced me to install software on my PC, and because I know you, I now expect a vast sea of scheister porn to spontaneously appear.

5. There should be occasional patrons of the store that are being chased by the zombies and run down aisles, blocking shots. If you kill them accidentally X happens, but if you can get to them and make contact with them, the guys should high five and say one of many things (thanks, bro!/man, that was close, dude! you saved me!) and whatnot. If you want to make it a cis-game, when the girls get there, run a quick animation of them hugging and the player character (who I am assuming is named Butter Toffee) will say some Bruce Campbell shit like "gimme some sugar, baby" before she runs off screen.

Just some thoughts to make it more interesting, varied, and less banal.

Thanks! Those are some good suggestions. How did you feel about the difficulty level?

Also, while it's not readily apparent, low shots will slow down anything they don't kill. Low does 1 damage, high does 2. Crawlers only have one health, so a single low kills them. CDs don't affect the bosses at all.

I've gotten to wave 8 twice and literally rage quit because the constant barrage of "need ammo" got on my nerves.

It's not a hard game to that point as much as rote. It needs something to spice it up. Remember in Galaga how sometimes they'd steal your ship and you could get it back, or the little UFOs in Space Invaders that gave you little goals? Something to break it up.

Also, I think it would be funnier and more thematic if they weren't zombies, but rather people who are holding out iPhones/pods. When they spawn they occasionally say shit like "VINYL IS DEAD", "STREAMING IS SUPERIOR" and "Physical Media is the past". Maybe even an ode to NOFX "Dinosaurs will die".

Clever stuff.

Also, if you get to a milestone (maybe levels 10, 15, 25) he should say something. As I am sure he IS the notorious diamond thief Butter Toffee, he should say some Jules Winnfield shit to denote that you've reached it. "I'm a bad motherfucker", "Everyone likes Butter Toffee" and "Servin' hot tracks, bitches"

The short version is that there's nothing really notifying you that you've gotten to a new wave. No sense of accomplishment in the short term. Maybe when a new wave starts there's some kind of an audio or video cue? Maybe just have the wave number appear in the lower left corner in 70's block letter font or have the store PA come on and say "Specials are available on aisle X" where X is the wave.
