The PDF (top, left) has the magazine, but essentially the entire report amounts to the PWHC Tech Forecast noting that business would be wise to capitalize on the research put into games as they relate to human nature, and effective motivation. Really stunning that such a large firm has put so much into the idea that a lot of the groundwork for emotional motivation research is done, it's just a matter of "gamifying" the workplace to motivate people to perform better.
Whether that manifests in dashboards that show people competing in real time (like every car dealership in America) or simply by changing the culture, who knows.
Anyhow, I thought this was interesting. The part about the mortgage company simulation was really kind of boring and ridiculous, but the rest was quite good.
(Sorry TSCook if this is too boring for you, you may want to try this link instead:

Interesting.
When one of the guys in my company's marketing department found out I used to work for FFG, he said he was going to hunt me down when they were ready to start gamification. Now I'm even more intrigued...

This is a great example of how it can be achieved easily and cheaply, albeit ineffectively. We use software similar to Salesforce in our other business unit, and when I was approached to see about implementing it with ours, I decided against because while it had a competitive dashboard for their salespeople to beat on one another, chide, torment or what have you, it really was just a way to micromanage employees and make sure they're doing 100 phone calls a day or whatever the "mark" was.
My business unit is greed-driven. We pay incentives for higher performance, higher percentages based on higher margin capture, those sorts of things. In my experience, salespeople can be motivated by only two things: the adrenaline of the hunt and the fat paychecks. The former are self-motivated, they get the energy from wanting to snatch someone else's lunch off the customer's plate, and they're easily the best in the business. The latter are the ones you have to bribe with commission increases, spiffs...et cetera. They're the ones you have to manipulate.
I think gamification can do wonders for both, but you need the right program; one that caters to the "hunters'" need to win, and one that provides feedback to the greed-driven ones so that they can see, easily, where they are in relation to the next pay tier.

Everytime I see this I change "Gamification" with "Numbers go up" to get a better assesment of the situation. Really it seems a terrible Skinner Box at best.
