apparently, games are now such serious business that there exist groups of people who "game" the system whereby people ask to go first

my least favourite part to that thread:

What I find annoying is people who insist on sticking with the "cute" player to start rule printed in some (most?) games.

It is not to be taken literally, but some people just can't accept that.

I love following the silly rules literally because the game is telling you two things:
1) going first does not have enormous impact on the game result
2) this game is not trying to take itself seriously and neither should you

the discussions that go on pre-game on who is the youngest, or cutest are really fun. I remember when I said my friend's wife was the cutest and my wife and others were playing the game too. It was my own Perks of Being a Wallflower moment

I suspect there's something of a backstory to that post. Poor guy. Always the bridesmaid, never the bride.

I ~always~ stick to the silly rules. You said it best, Barney - it's a game, not to be taken too seriously.

This thread just reminded me that Clearclaw exists, and I still can't believe that's a real person.

The rules to Moonbase Alpha say the first player is the last person who walked on the moon. In the unlikely event of a tie, you use a dice roll to decide who goes first. Not sure what the BGG crowd would make of this.

Apparently I will always go first in Small World because my great-grandmother was actually an elf. So I always have the most elf-like ears.
