Yahoo!! No more work until Sept 15th.

I am now officially on my summer holiday and the fuckers are even paying me for it. Ahh the joys of teaching internationally.

Now I can really focus on the important things in life like Dark Souls, Cuba Libre, Combat Commander all of which I am proceeding to play like a mad man. Time to get my sex on with my lovely wife.

A Distant Plain is waiting in the wings.....

Ordered all the Combat Commander supplements the other day so the only thing I haven't got is CC: Pacific. These games play great solo and I'm enjoying logging the events and making a narrative as I play.

Navajo Wars is on its way in the same package as all the CC shit.

Enjoy the next four months of work, suckers.......

OH blah blah blah.

You best practice you cowardly bastard. You may be able to avoid playing a game against a real opponent via Vassal...and no...I don't count Flim Flam as a "real" opponent. But WBC is coming (I just sent out the registration today) and I am going to kick your ass in something...I don't know what yet...but something.

Andy's going to be ankle deep in bathtub gin by Sunday. You'll be able to beat him at tic-tac-toe if you time it right.

Wait, how you play Combat Commander solo? I tried it once and thought it was kinda lame by myself.

Not easy, but fine if you have zero opponents within 3000 miles. Assume the other side always has a fire order when you are playing your cards (even if you know he hasn't). Play conservatively as the defender and aggressively as the attacker.

Wargamers are kind of used to playing solo and being a little schizophrenic. I really enjoyed it and a good way to thoroughly learn the rules (the rulebook is fucking terrible BTW).

Yea, I'd agree that it's an awful tool for learning the game. That said, I think it earns passing marks for being a fairly easy-to-use "WTF was the rule for calling indirect fire again?!?" reference book. It doesn't suffer too terribly from what I consider the bane of all wargamers: "95% of the rules for a certain action in 1 spot, 50% of the situation-specific modifiers to that same action scattered randomly across +/- 8 pages.

Make the effort to get CC: Pacific man. I really prefer the rule changes, altered mechanics for a number of key actions, and the more dynamic quality to the decks that were introduced in Pacific. Once a year or so, I take my pride, self-esteem, and any vestigial maturity I might have retained over the years and shelve it so that I can debase myself completely and push forward, unimpeded by anything so tedious as "shame", in (abject) begging for a system-wide update to bring CC:E/M in line with the new stuff introduced in Pacific. They'll likely never do it [and I understand all the reasons why they wouldn't], but I refuse to let anything so petty as reasoned, responsible, and sensible business- and consumer-oriented decisions from both the designer and the publisher to deter me from my crusade.... ;-)
