I have a playlist of folk and folk rock that I use for fantasy games. Proper old stuff where the lyrics are long tales of adventures, skullduggery and mythical encounters.
It's amazing stuff. Given the content I'm really surprised more gamers don't have a taste for it.

Not sure how good the music is, but I recently came across this site while looking for boardgame background music. Worth a look!

Big high-five to OP for shouting out Hawk the Slayer. Love that movie.
I only do the music thing if I'm soloing a game, or if it's just me and my girlfriend playing. We particularly like playing Japanese classical music or Toru Takemitsu during Samurai or Hanabi, synthwave/new retro wave during Star Realms or anything space-themed (Mitch Murder, Com Truise, Megadrive, etc.) and French or Italian baroque during any kind of Renaissance-themed euro.
If I'm soloing something like Mage Knight or a D&DAS game I like to play dissonant, ominous stuff from modern or contemporary composers like Edgar Varese, serial-era Schoenberg, Ligeti, Babbitt, Davidovsky, Thomas Ades, etc. Not long ago I picked up a random soundtrack to a movie called The Satan Bug - turned out it's a phenomenal 12-tone score that's really perfect for dungeon crawlers. Was soloing some Mage Knight Dungeons this morning and listening to that.

I've always liked Jesper Kyd's Hitman soundtracks. My personal favorites of his are a couple from the first game called "Dark Jungle" and "Harbor Themes" (if you're cherry-picking, that is). They're both electronica where "Dark Jungle" has a little bit of a NiN vibe and "Harbor Themes" is moody and dark.
I'm also a huge fan of the Hotline Miami OST but I'll be damned if I can think of a game/genre that it would pair well with.

i generally don't play music while playing my games, unless it's something epic like Space Hulk or any other Warhammer 40,000 game. In which case, there's the Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War soundtracks. They make that which is epic even more epic.

I like it when every time Jeff asks "What movie is this from?" and the answer is always Willow.
