Crazy. I don't know why someone would do this, but it's cool in a lot of ways.

I don't understand why you don't know why someone would do this...

Years back I had plans to make a model railroad set. I kept it limited to N-Scale and found a plan that fit on a 3'x5' table that had room for some variety and fun. I bought a bunch of the stuff but it never came to fruition...This video makes me want to pull that all out again.
So very neat. That's one of those things where you could go multiple times and every time see something new. My wife was watching over her shoulder and officially put this place on her Bucket List.

But it looks so amazing... rightfully called the 'Wunderland'.

Well, I guess I don't really know why anyone does anything. But you're right, I was being condescending about it while simultaneously thinking it was cool. I guess I'm at odds with my nerd self sometimes. It seems like a lot of tedious work to me but I do tedious work for different things.
I saw it and immediately thought about how cool it would be to wadge urban warfare on it with some of my ToI mini's.

This layout was conceived by the Braun brothers in the late 90s who should their line of stripclubs to pay for it. They are rockstars in Germany because of it. They helped James May (from Top Gear) on his HO scale train project for his Toy show a couple years ago. It is surely the pinnacle of model railroading, atleast in the HO scale. As much as I love my HO trains, my wife is not so keen to dedicate the garage to it. Little does she know that it is slowly happening regardless.
If you want to see crazy, look up live steamers, or the folk who model in T scale.
Edit:
Thats G,O,HO,N,Z,T in order. O is also called Lionel scale, it is also the perfect scale for wargaming with 28mm figures.

I still have some N scale trains from when I was a kid, my family tore down my (undeveloped) layout several years ago because it was taking up space at my grandmother's house and I haven't put them out of the box ever since.
Space really is a killer, specially since so many of the things you want to represent in a layout (Terminal stations, wide American landscapes, mountain passets, etc) take a lot of it. Using a smaller scale helps but it's still a huge investment.
I kind of wish I had the space and the money to represent a steampunk city, with big coal trains on every corner. Or something like The Ice Company and its domed cities communicated by giant, nuclear-powered Steam trains. After all, if the layout isn't going to be realistic there's nothing preventing you from running with it.
