There is a general geek culture consisting of a variety of overlapping fandoms that tend to appeal to many of the same people. And in this internet age, geek culture is becoming a bigger part of mainstream culture. Look at the utter domination of superhero movies in terms of box office, for example. Anyway, are there are parts of geek culture that you ignore or even actively dislike, to a degree that it makes some people question your geek credentials?

My own disqualifiers:

I skipped the entire Star Wars prequel trilogy.
Harry Potter didn't entertain me.
I don't enjoy Dr. Who.
After the first installment, I bailed on the Hobbit trilogy.
Farscape sucked.
I haven't gotten around to seeing most of the MCU movies, despite owning a dozen short boxes of Marvel comics.

EDIT: oh, and this one is possible grounds for loss of citizenship in Minnesota, but I am completely unimpressed with Mystery Science Theater 3000. I love the idea of the show, but the actual jokes are almost entirely crap.

not liking MST3k is blasphamous.

My own disqualifiers:

I've never watched Big Bang Theory. It's a choice.
I have not seen Age of Ultron and no intention to see it.
I didn't think Ocarina of Time was that great
I really don't enjoy playing Diplomacy
I don't read fantasy or sci-fi novels.
I REALLY don't like comic books.

there we go, I think I covered every form of media

My Dis-qualifiers:

I don't play video games. Like at all. The last video game I played was either Masters of Orion of Civ II. I can't remember, because it's been that long. And strangely, I've worked in software almost 25 years. A lot of my gaming friends work in the video gaming industry, and when they start talking shop, my eyes just gloss over.

I HATE COSPLAY, or furries, or any other douche-chilling geeky dress up.

I don't read fantasy novels. With these disclaimers. I love Conan, Elric, Game of Thrones, and the Silmarillion, but I dislike all other types Fantasy novels. And I played the hell out of D&D.

I hate LEGOS...Little hell caltrops.

My big one is that I actively dislike Star Wars (all of them).
I don't like Lord of the Rings.
I've never cared enough to check out Dr. Who.
I don't understand the appeal of Cosmic Encounter.

I don't read comics though I would probably like the one and done variety.
I don't like shitty plastic toys and miniatures (except Lego).
I can't stand superheroes and don't watch superhero movies and TV shows.
But my real beef is with 'fandom' and celebrity culture. Rampant consumerism comes a close second.

I don't enjoy Monty Python or Dr. Who at all.
I've never played Cosmic Encounter.
I enjoy the Star Wars prequels.
The love for Blade Runner befuddles me to no end.
I don't really dig sci-fi all that much.

It's no shame not liking Dr Who. It was never made for the American market anyway. Ditto Monty Python.

Anyway

Don't like socialising and interacting much, so D&D is definitely out
Once liked Rick Wakeman's Journey to the Centre of the Earth
Hate the prequels
Hate Star Trek movies
Cosplay, I have no time for
Thinks Monty Python is just upper class humour (which it is)

- Don't really care for Doctor Who. It's okay, but I don't get the intense love for it that many have.
- Not really into comics, though I like a lot of the comic properties when in films. Read a lot of comic books as a kid, but just lost interest/patience for keeping up with that.
- I like stage musicals (though I might suggest that a few are kind of geeky, thematically).
- Not into video games at all. Grew up on arcade games and still like casually playing Wii, but have no interest in FPS or stuff like that.
- Have no interest in anime. It's probably great, but just doesn't seem appealing to me as a visual style.

= Despite growing up in the 80s, I haven't seen a lot of the 80s movie nerds adore. No Mads Max, no Evils Dead, not even a Goonies
= Similarly, no love for Transformers, He-Man, GI Joe, or TNMT
= I don't care for Star Trek
= here's the biggie: couldn't give less of a fuck about Lord of the Rings.
= Don't care about superhero comics, don't care about the movies in general. I would be thrilled if I never had to hear about Batman ever again
= Don't have much use for the Star Wars movies past the original one
= Never had a Nintendo, never played a Zelda, a Super Mario anything, and the only Final Fantasy I played was when I started 7 on the PS1 and shut it off after 30 minutes after it was clear that the game didn't care if I was playing it
= I think Harry Potter is junk, but I was far too old for it when it came out anyway
= This kind of shit? Fuck that kind of shit.
= I love Lego but wasn't rocked and rolled by the Lego Movie

Reading these posts tells me I'm hanging at the wrong site. I'm not cool enough to hate everything that's popular.

* I've never read any Harry Potter or seen any of the movies (well, more than 15 minutes), although I'm getting pushed into it because of the fact that we're going to Universal in June chiefly for the HP stuff
* In general, I think adults (outside of teachers) have little to no business reading most young-adult literature or seeing it as particularly deep and meaningful. Teenagers are generally not deep and meaningful, and the literature written for them generally isn't either. Grab a real book.
* I've read the Song of Ice and Fire books but think the TV show is better in almost every way and that GRRM is at best an adequate author whose attempts at "world building" are really just an excuse to avoid self-editing.
* I don't like The Princess Bride (movie, anyway -- have never read the book).
* If even my brother, whom I raised in my image as a Doctor Who fan, has given up on new Who, it's time to give up on it. I haven't even watched most of the most recent season.
* I hate that people want to get hugs from celebs. The last Doctor Who convention I was at was nearly ruined for me by that. Why the organizers didn't put a stop to that, I'll never know, but it happened several times in Q&A sessions.
* By the way, I hate Q&A sessions. I don't care what your stupid question is, in all likelihood the person's heard it a million times, and you should just go home.
* I watched maybe nine episodes of The Walking Dead and thought it was pretty meh. That people remain so enamored is beyond me.
* I've watched relatively few "important" TV shows in general.
* I have trouble understanding why there are so many "unboxing" videos except for the fact that they're easy to do and require no analysis.
