I've made silly mention of my sole Kickstarting effort before, usually has an amendment to a unrelated or tangential topic. But seeing as how you directly asked, I'll bite:

It's not board game related...
I'm an artist by day, and this KS was a modest little campaign to draw awareness to an esoteric performance that could have been otherwise lost. Lost in a sea of performances at a high-end / high-brow art fair. To that effect, it worked brilliantly. I got my funding (and then some), and I got a lot of press. My biggest regret was not allowing the countless updates to be publicly posted. I only allowed backers access to the updates. In doing so, I thought I was treating backers to special content (there was a lot of research). But with 20/20, I should have just made it public with the hopes of pulling in more backers. I've been tempted to pull off another KS, or 3, but I always fall short of pulling the trigger. Marketing is a part of the job for any artist, but I found marketing for KS particularly time absorbing. Time I often feel would be better spent with me in the studio. But maybe that's me being lazy. I don't know. I need an assistant...

I must say that the support I received from this site around the project was ASTOUNDING! Not just in terms of funding, but the enthusiasm shared in these forums and on BGG was incredibly cool. You guys are the greatest!

In a lot of ways Kickstarter is like performance art, like flash mobs. You're in because you want to be in. You want to be part of it.
Or because you fear the downside risk.
I've backed a couple. Both turned out to be good games. There's good stuff out there if you look a bit.

I've been part of one Kickstarter, Aerial Assault. It was kind of a pain in the ass to do the video, website, and shill the game but in the end I'm glad we did. It gave us clear estimation on number of games to produce. It also pushed us to get the game produced as soon we could because we knew we had backers to meet. And I'll echo what engineer Al said about thanking everyone for their amazing support. On the other hand, I don't think I'll ever do another Kickstarter.

F:AT does, however, take a strong editorial stance against bullshit.
Staff members are free to determine for themselves what is included in the blanket term "bullshit" at a personal level.

Like the man said...
"You know, if one person, just one person, does it, they may think he's
Really sick and they won't take him.
And if two people do it, in harmony, they may think they're both faggots and
They won't take either of them.
And if three people do it! Can you imagine three people walkin' in, sayin'
"fuck kickstarter" and walkin' out? They may think it's an organization!!"

With that type of nonsense it makes more sense to just wait for expansions and at least feel you were delivered a complete product at time of launch. I don't pay much attention to Kickstarter but believe in its purpose and some nice projects have seen the light of day because of it. It's more of a win for artists that can use this platform to find their audience quicker than relying on someone else to do it for them - which may or may not ever work out.

KS has been a fantastic experience for me -- aside from the obvious fund-raising aspect, it's a great tool for organizing and promoting these projects that I really care about. I take it really seriously. People giving me their money and trust is encouraging but also potentially really stressful, so I strive to set realistic expectations that I can meet. My first two came through on time and on budget, and everything looks good for #3 (although I've not been able to do much else this summer!).
There has been some blanket anti-KS negativity on this site. I can't remember who exactly, but more than one poster has dismissed the whole idea of KS out of hand. Overall, though, F:ATties have been super supportive. This is a great community! And what KingPut says about backing people you know is totally true. When Space Cadets: Away Missions went up on KS, I imagine anyone who knows Al and had the $ in their pocket probably backed it, because Al is awesome. A lot of us backed Matt's Glamazons game because we love Matt, which is a good illustration of the other side of the coin of knowing people personally -- Glamazons has encountered some serious hurdles and is long past its due date, but if you know Matt, you know that you can trust that he's been doing everything within his power to bring the game to completion.
So far I have no regrets at all. KS has allowed me to pursue a lifelong dream of making fun RPG stuff that people will play.

I've only been burned once, and it was Glamazons. I hate to admit it, but I knew that was going to happen and 20$ or whatever is no big deal so I'm not really all that pissed. I'm just glad I donated it to a friend rather than some asshat in Poland. ( lol )
I think Kickstarter is simply a means to an end, and if you do you due diligence when choosing projects, you will likely not get burned. Far more prolific are bad games by bad designers, and that's not a Kickstarter problem, it's that people back stupid shit and have no discrimination. Hype wagon BGG bullshit, basically.
The only thing that I really want to see is a good adventuring, Indiana Jones type game, like, I guess, sort of like....THRILLING TALES BY JASON LUTES!!!
I will probably Kickstart a couple projects someday. Hood rats needs to be made. If Z-Man doesn't want to make SEAL Team Flix, I'll probably Kickstart that too.

Someone asked about this project on BGG recently. Any update?

I have been involved with a KS of course for Dinero. It was not an enjoyable experience, but having my game published and hearing positive experiences is.
It's looking like my next game will be on Kickstarter as well in 2017.
I do purposely refrain from talking about Kickstarter at times on FAT because I know many people on here have strong negative opinions associated with it.

I'm currently working on a game design that I have been developing on and off for 3 years. I don't know if any publisher will want it. I really want to see it get made, but the notion of suddenly marshaling one or more artists, sculptors, Chinese manufacturing, shipping concerns..... gives me major pause. I'm not sure I'd come out the other side feeling like it was worth it. And I certainly don't mean financially; I am not involved in this industry to make money. Which is a good thing, since I don't make any.
edit- the other thing I like about it is the potential for some democratic process. For example, if I were to kickstart the game I mentioned above, I'd likely list the game as coming with standees, and have a stretch goal detailing how much cost miniatures would add to the project. If people really wanted plastic, they could throw money at it until they got plastic.

Twlight Struggle video game - ended up not getting made for Xbox One so I got my money back. They were very nice.
Epic card game (drafting game) - played it once.
Yeah, I'm not overly smitten with KS

The Random Dungeon Generator poster. 5/5
Malevolence - a PC game. 2/5
Impact City Roller Derby. 4/5 I backed this for two reasons. I wanted to see a roller derby game in print that seemed to represent the fast a fluid nature of the game and I trust the designers. Alas, I have not even played it, but I do like their offer of putting your local team on cards of their own for the game. As a roller derby ref, this project checked a lot of boxes for me.
Reaper 1 and 2 campaigns 18/5!
I like the system they have there. I don't care if there are stupid projects that people with throw their money at because there are zombies or boobs. I think it is a great place for someone to learn the value of the 'let the buyer beware' axiom.
I picture KS like a casino. I don't play on there with money I can't afford to lose. I know that may be a possibility going into the transaction and if it happens, too bad for me. But it is great when it pays off like the Reaper stuff.
