TOPIC: The coolest thing I've ever seen.

30 Apr 2011 21:12 #95473

The coolest thing I've ever seen.

Wasn't sure where to post this as there was never a 'What PLAYS Are You Seeing?' thread. So the missus took me to a 'play' on Wednesday and it was one of the most amazing experiences I can remember. It's called Sleep No More and I just can't recommend it highly enough. A six story warehouse was converted into a set comprised of over 100 insanely detaied rooms that the audience wanders through as the cast acts out scenes around you. It's completely non-linear and there's no one particular way to experience the production. The missus and I both saw entire wings that the other didn't, not to mention acted scenes.

The detail in each of the rooms is mindblowing. You can open drawers and rifle through desks. Full fronatl nudity abounds. There's extremely bloody violence. And all the people in the audience wear identical Venetian masks. Fucking nuts.I have not been able to stop thinking about it. I'm going again for sure. If any of you are anywhere near NYC make sure you see this, you will not regret it. It runs through June 25th.

Here's the productions website sleepnomorenyc.com/

Here's the NY Times review. Check out the slideshow.

Wow. That does sound incredibly cool. It is almost perfomance art meets theater.

Now I'm going to have to revive the "What do you think yuo know about fellow ATer's" Thread.

Re: The coolest thing I've ever seen.

They call it 'immersive theatre.' I felt like someone had slipped some mushrooms into my drink. I wanted to go in fresh, so I didn't read any reviews and consequently had absolutely no idea what was going on half of the time. Mostly I just snooped around for clues for the first 30 minutes or so that I was there. (we were there for a little over 2 hours not including cocktails) I really want to go back so I can follow more of the 'story', which is hard to do as you've gotta chase the actors all around the building and choose which ones to follow. It's totally bananas.

I think folks that are into super thematic and immersive games (i.e. most of y'all) would love this. I've talked a shit ton of my friends into getting tickets mainly because I won't shut up abut it.

You know if this is the sort of thing they might have discount tickets for sometime/somewhere or for students or whatever? The cheapest I could find was $75 and as cool as this sounds, that's not really something I think I could swing.

This sounds so awesome, but I won't be in NYC until some point next year (and THAT's being hopeful).

Sadness.

I'd really love to see this. I might even be something that I could swing.

Ages ago, I worked on a production that was done in this format, although on a much smaller scale. Very exciting, but also absolutely exhausting. No kicking back in the greenroom. Cast, crew and front-of-house are on their feet and running from the time the doors open until the last member of the audience is herded out.

This is the stuff I would have loved to have done during my theatre days. It's seems both exhausting and exhilarating at the same time.

It's productions like this, that make me miss the theatre something fierce.

Re: The coolest thing I've ever seen.

I'm not sure about a student discount Matt, but it's worth giving them a call to see. They've got loads of volunteers as well, so maybe if you put in a little work you could see it for free. Lots of NY productions work like that, so you never know. I know 75 bucks is a bit steep, but I really can't stress enough how fucking cool this is. I'm gonna throw down the cash to see it again for sure. And I agonize over 35 dollar game purchases!

Uba, you won't regret it. I think you mentioned that you used to play the Call of Cthulhu RPG; anyone who's into that kind of shit or horror in general will love this. A reviewer for the Boston Herald said it best: "It's like walking through a dream that someone else is having." Lemme know if you make it down, I'll stand you a round or two at the bar afterwards and we can compare notes. Alright, I've gotta quit gushing about this...

I'll be the first to admit I'm an uncultured swine and think theater is lame, but this sounds freaking amazing. Like a haunted house on crack.

$75 is steep but having to travel all the way to NYC is the killer. Damn, I wish this was closer.

Re: The coolest thing I've ever seen.

I absolutely want to do this. I had a chance to visit NYC last year, but couldn't be bothered to put forth the effort, but I would do it just to check out this play. It sounds borderline insane, like something one would encounter in Lost Carcossa.
