...or Show Us Your Bones?

I'm not good at painting, but I do enjoy it and every now and then I get a happy accident and make something look really cool. Sometimes I dip the figures, sometimes not. I've decided I don't want to dip most of the bones figures; I want to mainly focus on dry brush techniques to get details. Some of the finer points are impossible for me since my hand is not very steady.

Here's what I've got so far.

I wanted to use some non-standard colors for a change on this guy.

I can definitely tell you that you do NOT want to dip the translucent figures. I thought it would be a good way to get the details to pop, but they remained tacky pretty much...forever.

You are making me think about the giant box of Bones mini's we haven't had time to think about painting.

I had read that you should use a spray matte varnish on the translucent figures before doing any painting so that the paint will dry. If I can convince Matt of it I really think they look nice with some dry brushing.

Hotseat: paint them with 1/4 elmer's glue mixed with 3/4 water. It seals the model and removes the tack.

Those translucents aren't finished or based in these pics; I added the details after these were taken, like painting the gravestone grey.

THIS IS A MUST. Without the base to stick to the paint runs off and looks terrible. I squirted with Krylon Matte Acrylic before painting and they were easy after that.

Pete,

This is for after it is painted?

After. If you "perma-tack" a model, this cures it. The trick is THIN. Several THIN coats is always better than 1 THICK coat. It will get progressively less tacky without a big buildup.

Once it's sealed, you can squirt it with dullcote or what-have-you to remove the shine. PVA glue is the single most underrated painting tool of all time, I shit you not.
