Hundreds of miniatures games out there that use rulers and dice, it has to stop somewhere!

Games Workshop managed to get Warhammer, 40k, Gorkamorka, Necromunda and Mordheim out of pretty much the same rules set. Then I'm not sure how to count Warhammer and its 8 editions or 40k with its 6 editions...All variations on the same theme.

So that is arguably 17 different games all variations on the same theme. Five if you don't buy into Different Editions = Different Games argument.

Maybe this might be sexist or un-pc, but I haven't seen many females playing XWing or Attack Wing and I do think that Dragons would have a wider general appeal.

Right. And that doesn't even include Battlefleet Gothic, the three versions of Epic, and Warmaster; all of which maintained the same d6 based combat rules and tape measure-based movement. Hell, look at the Columbia block games. They're still churning them out with minor variations and people seem to keep buying them.

It's true that it's getting to be an aesthetic issue more than a mechanical one. But unlike the CCG explosion of the early 90s, no one is trying to do Flight Path "better". They're just adapting different popular themes to it. I agree with VonTush. There's an untapped audience for fantasy that wouldn't spend two seconds looking at a space combat game but might like the idea of Dragonriders of Pern on the table or whatever.

I am tentatively excited. I think this theme is virtually limitless, but I have grave reservations about wizkid mini quality, hopefully the DnD connection will rectify this. But they need to pay attention to scale from the start as I can only imagine that griffon and pegasi will show up eventually and they ought to look smaller. Plus I hope they integrate altitude in some fashion (adding base discs like the dragonlance game might work) just to spice it up a bit and hopefully allow for air to ground combat with granularity.

But mini quality is key. If pre-painted its gotta be xwing quality at least, otherwise id rather have clean sculpts that I can paint (I very much doubt this).

At one point, I was a DragonLance fanatic. I think I still have all the "novels", something like 200 of them and all 3 boardgames. It would be the perfect setting and characters for this line. A shit ton of variability, and really cool to give to pay homage to the setting that built TSR and allowed D&D to flourish due to its ridiculous sales.

I'm interested, but I want to know more. I've never paid any attention to the Star Trek game since I'm not a Trekkie.

A few days back the Rules were posted. I still haven't read through them, but some things that jumped out at me:

-No pre-measuring stuff
-Area attack weapons
-Different altitudes (High/Low/Ground)
-Stuff that "recharges" over multiple turns after use
-Troops form into blocks/regiments instead of a skirmish/dispersed formation
-The biggest draw that may have sealed my level of interest though is there is a campaign system. The first 19 expansions are all tying into the same story. I just skimmed the bits at this point but the base game comes with two scenarios and depending on the results the first (2-player) has five potential outcomes depending on what happened in the match. The second scenario has seven or eight potential outcomes and is a 3-player scenario. These results provide bonuses, EX so to speak.

So...I guess once my FLGS owner gets back from GenCon I need to offer up my services of running that event at the store.
