This picture right here:

Made me wish that there were a book of D&D creature illustrations done in the style of 18th/19th century naturalist paintings.

Let alone a museum with "taxidermy" of said creatures, like the NY Museum of Natural History.

That would be spectacular -- especially with detailed notes in the margins (e.g., details of teeth, reproductions of spoor, etc.).

I might be able to make that happen. Let me plant some ear worms.

I've said it before but the Owlbear is my all time favorite monster. Here's a pic, that I've posted before, of my first player token that sits proudly in my game room up on the mantle. I'm no painter but I think it looks pretty good (if a bit worn out).

Although I do think it's funny that it's always a bear body with an owl face... it would be great to see one pictured as an owl body with a little bear face.

Even though I don't play D&D right now I'd still like to pick up a Monster Manual just to look at once in awhile.

Some of my favorite artwork was by Erol Otus in the early D&D hardback books. His rendition of Cthulhu in Deities and Demigods was simply outstanding: evocative, powerful, and with such clean and bold lines...

Back when Barlowe's Guide to Extraterrestrials was current, I remember seeing some illustrations--probably in DRAGON magazine--that were like Audobon drawings of creatures that didn't exist. Little sketches of some sloth-bug's paws, little triptychs of threat displays of the Ctthhkkk or whatever. It's been more than 30 years and its stuck with me. So evocative. Like a naturalist's guide to a place that doesn't exist.

//ed, post-Googlin
Similar to Dougal Dixon's work, but ....better drawn? I am trying to find some examples...

That drawing always reminded me of Moe Howard.
