I used pennies as bases for 20mm Sci-Fi and it works very well. To finish/smooth out the surface you can use tile grout mixed with elmer's glue and maybe some sand. Or just straight up glue and sand like a normal base.

Gf9 also sells grey stuff. All options are pricey though. You can usually find a 3' roll of blue and yellow kneadatite for less than $12 if you shop around online.

It also bonds very well with super glue and provides a bit of additional protection to super glue's brittle bond.

Also, JB Weld putty is the king shit for models you plan to drill and/or peg.

Depends on the use, but I agree with the above. Milliput is easier to find too, and JB weld is nearly everywhere. I think I even saw it at the dollar store once. Metal to metal, I prefer JB weld. Especially when the metals are not the same.
