You check the boxes for damage and orders in the circle. You can use dry eraser or grease pencil.

Yeah, they're basically card versions of a Dry Erase Board - which I actually didn't know until I read a little bit more about the game.

At least in Federation Commander, writing on the actual ship cards (dry erase style) works really well.

Wits and Wagers (party/trivia game) also makes use of Dry Erase boards and markers to write your answers.

Yes, but there are many players who have complained the coating on their cards has worn off and the marker is starting to leave residue. Sleeves are probably still the way to go.

I definitely recommend using sleeves.
