Yeah, they're basically card versions of a Dry Erase Board - which I actually didn't know until I read a little bit more about the game.
At least in Federation Commander, writing on the actual ship cards (dry erase style) works really well.
Wits and Wagers (party/trivia game) also makes use of Dry Erase boards and markers to write your answers.

Sleeves are probably still the way to go.I believe the cards are coated so you can use a dry erase marker and just wipe the marker off. I'm starting to get interested in grabbing a couple of decks myself.
