We must be on the same brainwave, Joel, because that's when I was thinking about this. My wife was in bed at like 9PM Saturday, I was looking at my game shelf and thinking "there are a bunch of these games I haven't played in forever because my game group can't handle them, I wonder if anyone is around tonight?"

Sounds like there's some interest. I'm wondering what the best way to coordinate is. I'm tempted to just post here in this thread, but people don't check the thread often enough and it is easy to get it buried. I could call out days and just show? Dunno.

I might be in, depending on what we're playing. Having school-age kids can disrupt my schedule, though.

Y'all know how to get ahold of me on the emailz, if that's easier.

I might be up for this but my timescale is going to be all out of whack with you transatlantic folks. Rack some up, and I'll see what I can do.

Alright... opening proposal. How is labor day for you guys? The evening, say, 9 or 10 CST? I could also do really late for Barnes and any West Coasters if that's best.

I am playing TI on vassal with my "regular" online group at that time. But look forward to other games in the future.

I am interested in the Idea of VASSAL and hopeless intimidated. Any good go to reference for a complete and utter Noob to leanr about running/participating in a VASSAL game?

Sadly I don't have the time with work responsibilities, especially new one I just acquired to run a regular night but would love to try out VASSAL with alot of patient people. Here I stand and Sekigahara both sound cool to me but will NEVER be reasonable to play. TI3 falls in this category too.

VASSAL is pretty easy. It's a virtual game board, you can either play by sending files back and forth over e-mail or you can connect to them directly and play live (they see pieces you move, you see pieces they move). So you have a program you download, VASSAL, and then you download modules for particular games that you tell VASSAL to open. The modules occasionally have some automation but generally it's just an electronic version of a game board.

It's not too much more complicated than that, just a bit... you should go to www.vassalengine.org , download VASSAL, and mess around with some modules to get acquainted.

Your first stop should be the User Guide (this also comes with VASSAL, found in the Help menu after install).

Re: HIS--I think you'd be surprised. We play this live in the Facebook group from time to time. With people who know what they're doing you can do a turn in 1 to 1.5 hours, depending on how chatty everyone is. Save and reload the subsequent week to play some more. With the average game lasting 4-6 turns, you can finish in a month. Compare to the many months or (sadly) years that PBEM games can last.

I may be looking tonight. My game group just canceled. If nothing else I'll read up on live play. I've only done it solo and via log files in drop box.
