Just finished up with Gary Sax on Frederick's War -- I won Kolin as the Prussians! It was looking pretty grim but I managed to plunk a leader and get some great rolls to catch up from behind.

About an hour and fifteen including figuring out the interface. Skype in the ears added to the experience.

We should rename this thread "The Singles Bar". Show up early in the evening and see if anyone else is interested in a game.

Yep, Sag and I played Hold the Line this evening via VASSAL and Skype, I had an excellent time. We played a scenario that was super hard on the Prussians (Sag). I (Austria) was in control, but I brought my men down from the hills for a final charge in a turn I didn't have enough AP and it ended up a nailbiting Prussian win. Dabid dropped in for a bit to watch, thanks Dabid!

I would be totally game for most things 2 player or any other wargame I have. If it's something I haven't played, I can be ready with some notice.

I would *love* to schedule some live play of Great Campaigns of the American Civil War... I still really want to play Battle Above the Clouds big scenarios/campaigns over a few sessions... Another one I'd like to play is one of the Fast Action Battle games via VASSAL. Skype really, really helps live VASSAL play. I knew there was a reason I bought that super fancy headset.

Anyway, everyone should feel free to post days they're free if they have them, we don't have to have a single official F:AT VASSAL game night or anything. I'm still planning to start a game next Monday night around 9-10 CST. The Dr. might be able to make it, we should decide what to play this weekend once we know how many players we have.

Sounds like the technology worked well. I'll have to try it one of the these days.

I think Vassal has the right mix -- present the board and pieces and let the players enforce the rules. I was rusty on Frederick's War and Gary had just read the rules an hour before, but we managed to stay inside the lines as best I can tell. That's pretty much the same as any live boardgaming experience.

With the Skype going we had a solid conversation the entire time and it let's you talk over each other which keeps things brisk. I got the game room and game started up in short order and Gary figured out how to synch in, and at that point the Vassal server took care of everything else. When I wanted to draw attention to a particular piece I could just pick it up and drop it and Gary could see that in very close to real time.

One of the things with Frederick's War that I use to keep track of who came from where in a charge is to place pieces on the edge between the two hexes. That let's you know where to retreat to in the event you don't dislodge the target. Vassal lets that happen, other online game apps often want to snap those pieces back into the center of the hex as a "favor" to you and I generally don't like that. Vassal lets you put the pieces where you want even if it's an improper position just like on a real game board, so the little conventions people use to facilitate play (that aren't in the rules) are all available.

By the way, Gary has a very professorial voice. He's in the right line of work.

Something I will be advocating for in VASSAL 4 is a feature fairly common in multiplayer computer games (Company of Heroes comes immediately to mind)--a tool that lets you click on the map to give someone else a visual cue on the map and/or audio alert to focus attention on a particular spot.

Bumping this up to say that I just got Merchants and Marauders in the mail... I would get a huge kick out of playing that Monday night (esp. with more than 2!), but I'm open to whatever if I have time to read the rules.

I'd be in for M+M, but Monday is no good for me. Driving back from a camping trip that day.

If you get no takers, or want a second round, I'll make some time in the future.
