Thank you so much schlepp.

My great-grandfather was from Flensburg. From what I could gather about it, it didn't seem like a nice place to stay and didn't seem to have anything to do. But from what you describe, it sounds like it would actually be a good place to stop.

Schleswig sounds cool too. I would totally be into seeing those bog mummies (studied those in school) and the Viking town.

I'm super excited now.

Also on topic: when in Flensburg check out Gandalph (yes, ph), a pretty good FLGS in Flensburg (Große Straße 65, 24937 Flensburg).

Then I am going to Skagen.

Also, if you're road tripping and don't mind a bit more time in the car, you should get off the freeway before Roskilde and drive around near Lejre and Hvalsoe (that's where I live, do stop by). The landscape is very hilly with lots of burial mounds and very different from what you'll find in the rest of Denmark because of all the small hills.

Seriously? I would so love to meet you. PMing you.

On the off chance that you are in Flensburg/Schleswig on the weekend 13/14 June, let me know. I'm in the north for a school reunion.

btw, if you want to have a great time there, stitch a Canadian flag to your luggage or backpack. In no other country in the world have I ever been made to feel more welcome. They love Canucks in that country.

Just tear off that flag if you go anywhere near the border of Spain.

Hehe, well everybody knows that it's the Americans that are sewing Canadian flags on their backpacks. Don't worry though, they will normally still be nice to you, even if you are identified as a US citizen. :)

I think the only place I've ever traveled to where people weren't nice to me because I was an American, is Canada. Although a dude in Prague once told me I was nice, but "funny looking."

It is not 100% yet, but I will probably be moving to Lübeck in early April, so maybe we could meet.

I haven't been up there since I was a little child, so I wouldn't mind travelling to another Northern German city as well.

P.S. I like the new site design.

You know that scene in Wizard of Oz, when Dorethy opens the door to the house, and suddenly every thing is in color. That's what Holland and Denmark are like. I don't have words to describe what it is like to be driving, and round a corner and suddenly see a rainbow of tulip fields spread out before you, or the words for all the shades of green in Denmark's country side, or the color of blue of the Skagen sky, or seeing a Van Gough up close, or the lonely sound of the birds on the Viking burial grounds. Plus, beer and visiting F:ATies and the best bread and cheese ever.
