I am always in need of boxes, to be honest. For example, yesterday I was moving around some stuff on my game shelf and realized that I will <<NEVER>> play Dragon Strike again, so I pulled out the bits I wanted, loaded it with pick-and-pluck foam, and loaded in my painted Ravenloft and Ashardolon dudes, which were previously freeballin' in a Plano box. So, don't be surprised when people need game boxes...there's good reasons for it sometimes! ;)

I offered my Dreadball Striker setup for a couple of painted Firestorm Armada starters, hoping it flies. I really liked that game when I played it, and it has a lot less of the fiddliness of Star Wars: Armada.

Trade 1:
OUT:
Spurs, Doom and Bloom Survival, Rogue Agent, Lords of Waterdeep, Power Grid
IN:
2x SW Armada Starter, 1x Assault Frigate, 1x 1x Imp Fighter, 1x Reb Fighter

Trade 2:
OUT:
Dreadball Striker
IN:
Firestorm Armada: Terran Starter, Dizz Starter + random ships.

I feel like these were solid, fair deals.

Miniature Market has got a sale on for their Spartan Games stuff if you were looking at adding to your Firestorm collection.

Nice haul. You'll be knee deep in space gaming this month.

My gut tells me I'll be trading the Star Wars Armada stuff because Spartan makes great skirmish games where FFG could fuck up a free lunch. I'm already looking at it as "too fiddly" but I can't envision a better trade from a financial standpoint because now I can piece it out if I don't like it, and it's in relative demand.

I'm way more jazzed about Firestorm. It's the little things, like the fact you can roll the ships. Why is it with most games if your starboard shield is down, you have to maneuver out to hide that side instead of just rolling and presenting the opposite side??

I think it's because it's a science-fantasy cliche that we're all used to and can easily comprehend at a glance. Well, I still like the mechanic, gamewise. It makes maneuvering interesting and important. I think a hyper-realistic space game would be something few people wanted to play. More like modern submarine warfare - all about first detection and first strike (and incredibly lethal). At least that's my very basic understanding of it.

I dunno, I don't think Armada is THAT fiddly. Moderately so, yes. It is a minis game though and by definition those are, no? I think FFG did their best to make it smooth as they could. But we all have differnt tolerances for what we consider fiddley...

Funny, I remember Firestorm being slightly fiddly with the ship point defenses vs torpedoes and the tiny flyers rules. I think Dystopian Wars has an improved ruleset, but then you're stuck playing with steampunk ships which people on this site have a hate-on for. I probably would have gotten into Firestorm more if it weren't for DW and Uncharted Seas already taking up the time and funds.

edit: whoops! Google, then post. Didn't realize FA has a 2nd Edition rulebook out. No idea what's been changed.

Still torpedoes, but less difficult.. In essence, they made some tech differences between the factions - Terrans use missiles (which fighters and point defence can target) versus Directorate which has beam weapons (less effective vs shields but no point defence defence)

Pretty biased but clean and informative review.

"3 16-packs of chessex 16mm" LOL

Most attacks with capital ships are 5-10 dice, with only the largest being 10+. 6's explode (roll another die for 6's and 6's are worth 2 successes). You check successes vs enemy's damage resistance. If you exceed it, they take hits for excess. If your hits exceed their crit rating, really bad shit goes down...fires, crew sucked into space...

Some weapons are vulnerable to defensive dice. Torpedoes and missles can be shot down by fighters and point defense. Terrans have shields which can block a hit.

It's not crazy until you get into linked fire- if you have a battle cruiser with 4 escorts as a "squadron" they can all fire together. You combine all the dice, then halve them. So, it's not inconceivable to fire on a Dreadnaught with 20 dice when you link.

I'm pretty jazzed about it, to be honest. Not keen on painting a half million ships but the great part about painting big stuff is that details aren't as hard and you can crack out the airbrush. I'm going to make them look BFA.

Pete, if you end up trading your SW Armada stuff, let me know. I personally love the game but haven't pulled trigger on actually owning any of it.

OUT: Steam. I bought this back when Martin Wallace was pissing off that one Age of Steam guy, and there was a big kerfluffle. Haven't played it in years.

IN: Blue Moons Legend. My son is playing MtG at school, and it seems like it would be nice to have a nine-deck, complete, portable game. Plus I read a review from someone on here-I thought it was Sagrilarus--who described it in almost religious terms. Apparently you have to break through the first 5-6 plays before its genius becomes apparent.

Give it time. I thought the game sucked for a while after it first came out. It didn't seem like there was really anything to it. There is a kind of break even point where you realize some of the subtleties of it, that it is about not playing a card as much as it is playing one. It is definitely the kind of game that develops the more you play it, the more you know the cards, and the more skillful you get with it. Playing with the same folks over time yields a great experience, IMO.
