Talk to me about Tokyo

So my wife has been secretly saving travel money for the last two years and bought us cheap tickets (35 hours one way) to Tokyo. We'll be there for a week. I don't want to read so much about the city that it ceases to hold any surprises, but on the other hand I need to start planning something because we are leaving at the end of April. Have any of you done Tokyo and do you have any recommendations? All I know so far:

1. Get a pocket wifi thing at the airport for cheap internet and navigational purposes
2. Always ask the conductor for directions
3. I've been told I have to check out Tateyama
4. Those aren't thin cotton caps in the vending machines
5. My wife says she doesn't want to shop, but come on.
6. We've printed out a bunch of walking tours from a government tourist site that look pretty good.

We have no problem with doing standard tourist things, and will be there for a week. There seems to be a surplus of relatively cheap Airbnb, and the dollar is strong right now.

Research a bunch about Japan train! I don't remember exactly, but you can pre-buy tickets.

Also, don't forget that universal electric plug converter!

EDIT: Found it! For $271 per person you can use train, some busses, and even ferries for one week, including (but not the fastest) shinkansens.

I don't know what you've been reading, but those are absolutely thin cotton caps in those machines. They have 2 air holes at the top for ventilation, and it's a tradition to post pictures of yourselves wearing the caps.

You would be doing a disservice to this site if you don't visit the Robot Restaurant.

She spent 2 YEARS saving for this trip and doesn't have the entire city memorized?

Anyway, I have little to contribute other than hitting up some whisky bars and, if possible, defend your lady against a 50's era japanese biker gang and then have passionate sex in an hourly love motel themed to nintendo characters....and get a Hattori Hanzo sword to carry around with you everywhere.

She spent two years saving for a generic vacation, and we just recently decided on Tokyo, because we've been to Europe and a small part of southeast Asia, and all over the mountain west, and tickets were $600.

The toilets at LAX are very different from Narita airport

The only accessory at LAX is a thin misting of urine. Thanks stranger!

Be careful because they might have used that cup to store their tentacles. ;-)
