IMPERIAL or IMPERIAL 2030 (one of my groups really wants to try this, and I've never played it so why not, Rondel be damned)

No need to feel shame, brother.

I hope Shaun is going to be in Essen again this year so that I can buy the World Cup Game there.

Maybe I should buy a whole lot and send it to the USA Canada?

I'm sure we can arrange to send you a copy Doc, provided that you're willing to pay a $20 surchage for being and residing in Canada.

Well the differences are subtle rulewise. 2030 adds a bunch of new neutral territories, so I found it took longer to build up and directly interact with the other players, as is different in Imperial where buildup time takes less turns before you really start needling everyone. Also there is a factory limit in 2030 which adds to the lessening of direct conflict because you are limited at the number of armies and you can build in a turn. Then there is the whole fixed taxation of 2030 vs. the variable in imperial. The variable taxation usually becomes a race in Imperial that brings he game into more of a stressed ending. In 2030 taxation is static so the game length becomes fixed and planning becomes more linear.

All that would I think that put 2030 into the "more euro" category. So IMHO, I think you would like Imperial Classic over New Coke.

fixed taxation?? Weird. I imagine that'd flatten a big part of the dynamism of the original game.

Well, it's not physically fixed, as there is still a taxation round on the rondel, but it has a "fixed" effect on game play. as in Imperial taxation effected power increases 1 to 1, but in 2030 it only effect power increases in groupings, and it's power increases are less. So taxation becomes less important for endgame power increases. It's a subtle difference, but we found the difference took out the end game race condition. Not "fixed" but becomes fixed.
