Bugs: Recent Topics Paging, Uploading Images & Preview (11 Dec 2020)

Recent Topics paging, uploading images and preview bugs require a patch which has not yet been released.

× WELCOME TO TRASHDOME!

This is part of a series of bloody matches to the death. Show support for your favorite game so it will do better in the fight. You can support it by writing why you think its the better game and more importantly by betting (i.e. voting for) it. Please make it clear for when I check the bets later. You have until Friday when I tally the bets and declare the winner. I will reserve my bet for any tie-breakers.

Although you should be familiar with both games, there is no rule that says you have to have played both of them. The only rule in Trashdome is this;

Two games enter! One game leaves!

Upcoming Trashdome and some help with Hybrids

Now that WBC and Gencon is done, I wanted to start Trashdome back up again. First lets recap our winners so far:

King of Ameritrash: Dune (Runner up Cosmic Encounter)
Queen of Eurogames: Through the Ages (Runner up El Grande)
General of Wargames: Here I Stand (Runner up Hannibal)

Next up will be our fun back school Trash Jr. category with games like Heroscape, Cash & Guns, Star Wars Epic Duels and the King of Tokyo. Maybe at Halloween we'll do a short horror / Zombie games or movie addition of Trashdome. I'd also like to do a racing or dexterity category. And finally I want to tackle interesting but hard to define the Waro / Hybrid category.

Please take a look at the Waro / Hybrid category and post your argument why a game doesn't belong here or if I'm I missing a top 16 Hybrid / Waro. My best definition of a Hybrid / Waro would be a game that has conflict but uses mostly Euro mechanism. So you can see a lot of Civilization type games on this list.

Best Hybrid / Waros based on TOS ratings:
1. Eclipse
2. Mage Knight
3. Dominant Species
4. Sid Meiers Civilization
5. Shogun
6. Imperial
7. Space Alert
8. Imperial 2030
9. Small World
10. Wallenstein
11. Civilization
12. Cyclades
13. Princes of the Renaissance
14. Primordal Soup
15. Age of Renaissance
16. Gods Playground
17. Mare Nostrum
18. End of Triumvirate

I'd throw Twilight Struggle in here as well.

Does Dominant Species have combat?

I thought it was just denying other players resources or space in which case it's a pure Euro.

Chaos in the Old World?

Edit: DAMN, beaten by Loter.

And for sake of variety I suggest we bundle Shogun/Wallenstein as one game, ditto Imperial/Imperial 2030 (Or just pick one from each) as well as bump off FFG Civ, because nobody's going to vote for that over the AH version.

I feel like Warrior Knights was one of the first of these. It should be on the list.

AGOT has got to be on there. AFAOS is probably a hybrid too, not that i rate it that highly. Are we talking hybrid euro/trash or war/euros?

I'll add A Game of Thrones the Board Game to the Hybrid list.

Here was the Ameritrash top 16:
#1 Eclipse - Eclipse was destoyed by CE in the first round. I think Eclipse is more of Euro or Hybrid so I'm dropping it from the AT list.
#16 Cosmic Encounter
#2 War of the Ring
#15 Arkham Horror
#3 Mage Knight - Mage Knight was destoyed by Dune in the first round. Similar to Eclipse I think it belongs in the Hybrid game list.
#14 Dune
#4 Earth Reborn
#13 Merchants & Marauders
#5 Battlestar Galatica
#12 Space Alert - I'm fine keeping SA as Ameritrash. So, I'll drop it from the Hybrid list.
#6. Runewars
#11. Space Hulk
#7. Twilight Imperium 3
#10 Thunderstone: Dragonspire
#8 Claustrophobia
#9 Chaos in the Old World

Chaos probably belongs in the Hybrid but it has tons of theme and dice for combat so we'll keep it as AT.

I think you're totally right about the Shogun / Wallenstein and Imperial / Imperial 2030 bundles. I listed about 18 games originally thinking we'd bundle game. Thanks for the confirmation. CIV AH and CIV FG are so different we'll keep both.

Although every mechanic in Dominant Species is pure Euro, in play the game is more of a wargame driven by worker placement. Almost every action taken can be used to fuck over the other players while boosting your own position. Even the pure combat action, competition, is pretty tame next to the ways players can screw with the resources on the board. You can easily this and Twilight Struggle as prime examples of a pure Euro engine driving a wargame (DS) or a pure wargame engine driving a Euro (TS).

I know the setting makes it more ameritrashy but I always feel weird because I see Imperial as being similar to Chicago Express.

Age of Renaissance is an awesome game :D
