Bugs: Recent Topics Paging, Uploading Images & Preview (11 Dec 2020)

Recent Topics paging, uploading images and preview bugs require a patch which has not yet been released.

× WELCOME TO TRASHDOME!

This is part of a series of bloody matches to the death. Show support for your favorite game so it will do better in the fight. You can support it by writing why you think its the better game and more importantly by betting (i.e. voting for) it. Please make it clear for when I check the bets later. You have until Friday when I tally the bets and declare the winner. I will reserve my bet for any tie-breakers.

Although you should be familiar with both games, there is no rule that says you have to have played both of them. The only rule in Trashdome is this;

Two games enter! One game leaves!

Then you are making a big mistake and missing out on a great game which is War of the Ring.

Even without the LOTR theme War of the Ring wouldn't interest me.

Heresy! Apostasy! Other words ending in sy!

It's really a great game, despite having the steepest learning curve of any game I've ever played. So much so, that I literally made a "quick reference" on sticky paper and glued it to the board. Imagine the Elves' surprise when instead of Valinor, they ran aground in a WALL OF TEXT AND ICONS.

It's a non-issue for me. With board games I'm much more interested in the distillation process. How computer games become board games. How theme becomes mechanic. If it's an IP I'm familiar with, it's a plus, but not so much.

And let me add, that I also have zero interest in WotR. Regardless of theme.

Licensed IP, with very few exceptions.

Look at FFGs terrinoth for an example of how not to handle an original ip.
Look at privateer presses's monsterpocalypse for an example of how to successfully handle an original ip. Pacific Rim is essentially an 8th of the background of monpoc.

Compelling original ip is possible. It needs many years of competant nurturing though in order to make it relevant beyond "insert generic fantasy D&D ripoff trope here".

Gale Force Nine games seem to attract me in spite of the IP. I had no prior interest in Spartacus, Sons of Anarchy or Homeland, but positive reviews grabbed my attention. Yet despite being a big fan of Firefly, acquiring that board game is a lower priority because the game itself is less distinctive and relies more heavily on the IP.

Original Setting, provided it's well done and the authors have put a bit of creativity into it (Divine Right, not Terrinoth).

I'm still interested in IPs that haven't been done (to death) already, so:

Well Done Original Setting > IP that is relatively unused > Star Wars/LotR/Cthulhu > Terrinoth

I'd probably have bought into X-wing if it wasn't Star Wars.
