Bugs: Recent Topics Paging, Uploading Images & Preview (11 Dec 2020)

Recent Topics paging, uploading images and preview bugs require a patch which has not yet been released.

× WELCOME TO TRASHDOME!

This is part of a series of bloody matches to the death. Show support for your favorite game so it will do better in the fight. You can support it by writing why you think its the better game and more importantly by betting (i.e. voting for) it. Please make it clear for when I check the bets later. You have until Friday when I tally the bets and declare the winner. I will reserve my bet for any tie-breakers.

Although you should be familiar with both games, there is no rule that says you have to have played both of them. The only rule in Trashdome is this;

Two games enter! One game leaves!

Dungeon World VS Dungeon Crawl Classics

I have both of these and can definitely get a funnel for one of them played. Which do you prefer and why?

I prefer DCC, but with a caveat.

I think it works best if you don't get too attached to the characters and are just as entertained with their demise as you are with their success. The tone of the game goes against any sort of fudging in the PCs favor. It's raw, old school, let-the-dice-fall-where-they-may and it's glorious.

DCC is a great game. Tons of fun, but the group has to be ok with PC death and not getting emotionally caught up in it.

Get some bowls of popcorn and have fun!

DCC for me too. DW is great at producing D&D as it exists in people's memories: big heroes being awesome through adversity. DCC is much closer to D&D in actuality: hapless schlubs going into the meat grinder to hilarious effect.

I like them both but I've had my fill of big damn heroes for the time being.

One thing they both do well is make it easy on the DM. DW does this through hippie judo: ask the players questions, riff on their answers. DCC is more traditional judo, taken to 11: use a shit-ton of random tables and derive endless entertainment from the PCs trying to deal with them.

Also everything that Mr. White said is correct.

Both are good, but I have more issues with DW than DCC. I'm fine with RPG mechanics hardwiring roleplaying into the mechanics (FFG's Star Wars games are great at this) but the way DW does it feels forced. PC will have conversations just to get XP by the end of the session. As a GM you could stop them, but it's often clear they're enjoying the banter. Despite that, at the end of the session, everyone in my group still felt like it was forced. I do really love the Apocalypse World engine though. My group is playing Monster of the Week right now and we're having a blast.

I will say that my group and I have zero interest in going back to either DW or DCC now that D&D is in the best iteration it's ever had. That wasn't the case when the other two games came out during the 4e years.

I haven't played Dungeon World, but it's Dungeon Crawl Classics all the way for me. I love the dungeon funnel, I love the weird old school art, I love the random tables, I love everything about it.

it depends what you want from roleplaying.

Do you want storytelling? Play Dungeon World.

Do you want a game that stories get told about? Play Dungeon Crawl Classics.

Mood is a thing for cattle or making love or playing the baliset.

+1 for the Dune reference.

This!

5e is like BECMI mated with 2e ad&dand then the offspring was raised by a Tiger Mom to be the best damn 15 year old gymnast/violin progeny in the world.

I use that analogy because I've seen wotc .......I know that rules bloat is coming........that child prodigy is going to move out, rebel against Mom and binge eat Pringles, get a tramp stamp, and go tour with an EDM group.

But 5e right now is pretty sweet.
