WELCOME TO TRASHDOME!

This is part of a series of bloody matches to the death. Show support for your favorite game so it will do better in the fight. You can support it by writing why you think its the better game and more importantly by betting (i.e. voting for) it. Please make it clear for when I check the bets later. You have until Friday when I tally the bets and declare the winner. I will reserve my bet for any tie-breakers.

Although you should be familiar with both games, there is no rule that says you have to have played both of them. The only rule in Trashdome is this;

Two games enter! One game leaves!

I'm hoping to play my copy of Castle Ravenloft tomorrow. That said, I never want to play FoD again. My last game 7 years ago sealed the deal. I was stuck in the Fog in La Havre unable to make my rolls to get out for almost two hours. What a shitty gaming experience. Can anyone explain what kind of 'valid input' can be done in that situation.

I'm voting for Castle Ravenloft even though I haven't played it based on the fact that I can't imagine it getting worse than that.

You could try playing the version that came out THIS millennium!

Yes, this was the original FoD. (No, I didn't play a rule wrong). No one specified the original or the reissue. Sorry, I'm so old school. I've never played the reissue, does it improve on the original?

I recon it does, even before I knew your situation could occur (which can't in the FFG version.)

You can see why I thought it sucked though, right? It ranks as one of my worst gaming experiences.

The original is called THE Fury of Dracula. (Yes now I'm being anal, I know - hehe)

I haven't played the original FoD, but I've played the new FoD a lot. In the new FoD, most encounters are resolved immediately. And even the ones that have lasting effects are still finished by the end of that player's next turn, like Fog. More importantly, the new FoD has a clever trail mechanic that makes it difficult for the Dracula player to cheat without getting caught, and imposes a brutal penalty for cheating. The game now allows for up to five players by making Mina Harker a playable character.

Also, the combat system may be different. In the new FoD, each player secretly selects a combat maneuver or weapon card, and then a quick roll-off determines which card will strike. You can't play the same card in two consecutive rounds of combat. In effect, the combat plays out like a light version of the Jyhad CCG combat.

Yeah, that would suck. I won't try to talk you into buying the new FoD, but I recommend that you give a try at some point. I own roughly 100 boardgames, and it's one of the best in my collection. My friends often ask to play Fury of Dracula.

You missed the most important change - Dracula is much more trackable with the new mechanic. In the old game it was way to easy (IMO) for dracula to remain hidden and all the hunters could really do for much of the game was attempt to stumble into him blindly. In the new version hunters will often know the general area drac is in as he leaves a trail of 6 locations (in the old one the trail was only his current location and the last one he was at.) This means there is a lot more trying to out think your opponent in there (ie "we know he was in amsterdam 3 turns ago, would he risk trying to sneak passed us or has he fled in the obvious direction away from us?")

Also, the combat system may be different. In the new FoD, each player secretly selects a combat maneuver or weapon card, and then a quick roll-off determines which card will strike. Combat system is pretty much the same, the old one had chits and lookup tables as opposed to cards, but the end result is pretty much the same. Biggest difference is in the old one you roll to see if its day or night at the start of battle (1-3 day, 4-6 night) but the new one its pre-determined by the sun track. So the old system was way more thematic (theme wise the new system doesn't make any sense - hunters are covering far too much of euorpe in a day!) but the new system is much more strategic and allows you to plan your attacks better.

Re:Trashdome - Fury Of Dracula VS Castle Ravenloft

Well, it turns out (according to my notes) that I was only trapped in fog for 45 minutes. Still, that sucks.

I guess I'd give the new one a go, but it seems that it is OoP and sold out everywhere.
